Scorpions Of Medical Importance by Prof. Keegan.

At last a worthy publication on the subject of scorpions - a classic book by Fitzgerald, which is filled with superb illustrations and fascinating information on the worlds most dangerous arachnids. The book covers all of the most deadly species, and ranges from the deserts of North Africa and Arabia, to the tropical forests of Jamaica, West Africa, Central America and the townships of South Africa. Also included ( due to their popularity ), are the large, but harmless forest scorpions - Pandinus and Heterometrus. A well written and beautifully illustrated book.

Quality academic paperback. Published by Fitzgerald. Price £16. ($27).

The Tarantula by Prof. William J. Baerg.

One of the great spider books of all time. A classic study of the Tarantula.

William Baerg was a teacher at the University of Arkansas for over 40 years and in that time he studied not only a local tarantula colony, but also the 'Red Leg' tarantula spiders of Mexico and much of Central America. In fact there can have been few men, who have collected tarantulas and scorpions against a skyline of dead bandits hanging from telegraph poles. But, much, much more, it was Baerg who was to collect all of the behavioural and breeding information, on which captive breeding is now based and which all writers since have utilised in the writing of their own books. If you want to understand your tarantula, read this wonderfully informative, highly readable book. High quality hardback. Published by Fitzgerald. Price £10. ($19)

Desert Tarantulas - a gem of a natural history video and the only tarantula documentary which has been filmed entirely on location. Original reviews described it as, "an intelligent documentary, with exciting macro footage, a great soundtrack and narration and - so real, you can smell the sweat of the cameraman." Filmed in the badlands of western Arizona. Price £10. VHS-PAL. British/European format.

Keeping Spiders, Insects & Other Invertebrates in Captivity

by Frances Murphy

This book is a much, loved classic, and bearing that in mind, we have striven to ensure that our new revised edition is better than the original. In order to achieve this, we located the original artwork and increased the size of the book to its new A5 format. We have also sympathetically updated the late authors original text, using many of her own notes from what was intended to be an extensive revision. It is an invaluable guide, which covers the keeping of a wide range of exotic creatures, ranging from allsorts of tropical spiders, scorpions and Windscorpions, to mantids, stick insects, grasshoppers, cockroaches, millipedes, centipedes, snails, silk moths and a host of other exotics. A classic book, from the doyen of British arachnology.

Paperback. 96 pages. 57 colour images. Price £7.

A Spiders World – Senses & Behaviour

by Dr. Friedrich G. Barth

This is a fine academic study, which the author has strived to present in a wonderfully readable and accessible fashion for the enthusiast. The book uses as its model, the large banana spider, Cupennius salei to pose and answer the key question, how do the various sensory systems of a spider work and what role do they play in behaviour? The end result of four hundred years of evolution is explained with aplomb and gusto.

Hardback. 400 pages. 16 colour plates. 309 illustrations. Price £50.

Stick Insects of Europe & the Mediterranean

New Book –USA Import
The Tarantulas of Belize by Dr. Steven Reichling

The Tarantulas of Belize is a comprehensive study of all of the Tarantula spider species, which have been discovered in the Central American country of Belize. It is of the new generation of American tarantula books - pioneered by the likes of such publishers as Barrons, that works on the assumption that a new book should have something fresh and original to say. I t also, refrains from automatically presuming that its target readers are morons – unlike one popular American pet shop publisher. For this we heartily congratulate the publisher Krieger, for having the gonads to publish a book, which at no point alludes to being yet another How To Keep.

The author, Steven Reichling - as a scientist, is of good field working stock and the contents of this book were obviously gathered, hands on in the forests and grasslands of Belize. Like the great American tarantula field worker, William Baerg who he refers to with warmth – Reichling is at his best writing about collecting field data. In other words, the original nitty gritty, which is not to be found in libraries and can only sourced by those who work the forests. For such individuals, if they are fortunate, comes the reward of an original behavioural research discovery.

Essentially this publication can best be described as being both a reference book and a field guide, which the author has cunningly used as platform, to bring together all that is presently known about the tarantulas of the region. The chapters cover ecology, habitats, how to find them, conservation and of course a detailed profile of each of the species – including colour photographs. Gripping stuff and exceedingly well done. Our only whinge as a publisher is that some of the b/w photographs would have worked better in colour. For a half penny of tar, as my nanny would have said, it could have been an excellent publication and for that the publisher should have their legs smacked - but it is a good book and is a must for the serious enthusiast. In fact it is important enough in the history of tarantula books, that as with Baerg’s classic book, The Tarantula not to have it in the years to come will be a matter of regret.
Paperback, 23cm x15cm. 127pp. 15 colour, 52 b/w. Price £17. Incl. p/p.
