  • Poecilotheria rufilata died today

Found my Poecilotheria rufilata dead today. "Covered in Mites"

Please excuse me for not posting any pics as I binned it straight away as it stunk and it's abdomen was soft and burst when I picked it up.

The mites were all over it's fangs round it's book lungs and spinneretts I wouldn't care when I went round and fed em all and checked up on them yesterday they were all fine. Well I'm off now to check the rest of my arboreal tanks.

    mites

    Hi - that's a real bad loss

Were they the round pearly mites? These don't damage living spiders, but quickly move onto anything dead in a tarantula's tank (I've had them appear even in heavily microwaved substrates!).

I hope your loss is just a one off!

Yeah they were. If thats the case then I don't know what it's died from then. All I can say was it stunk and they were crawling all over it I checked on my other T's and they are all doing fine. And the conditions of it's tank were fine too. Whatever has happened to it it happened during the night because yesterday it was eating fine.

Could it be possable that the tiny mites got into it's booklungs and sufficated it.

Strange, dead spiders don't generally start to stink for at least a couple of days - unless they're quite plump adults.
        Was it overheated at all?
