B.T.S 6th Annual Lectures and Dinner

VIP Guest Lecturer - Fernando Pérez-Miles

Bio: University of the Republic, Uruguay (School of Sciences) in 1978 and obtained his degree in 1984. In 1995, he obtained his PhD presenting a thesis on the systematics and phylogeny of the Theraphosinae.

The thesis included the first cladogram for the group. Since he was a small boy, he has been very interested in spiders. When he was 18 years old, he entered as fellow researcher at the IIBCE, where he worked for 20 years.

He has published about 50 papers on systematics and biology of New World theraphosid spiders. Right now, he is now full-time professor in Entomology Section of the School of Sciences, and is involved in the courses of Animal Biology for undergraduates and in the post-graduate course of Phylogenetic Systematics.

Bio: coming soon, however Boris has lectured for us a few times now and he has treated us to extremely interesting lectures, last years was excellent and captivating.

Jennifer Dobson from Liverpool Museum will be giving a lecture based on "life history of the solifugid in captivity"

Bio: JD is an arachnologist and zoo keeper at Liverpool Museums Bughouse, a small arthropod zoo. She also an invertebrate expert advisor for the RSPCA, inspecting pet shops and collecting and re-homing all manner of invertebrates. Currently studying their life history in captivity for research and masters degree.

This is a very under researched area and she will be presenting some ground breaking information as well as displaying preserved specimens.

1.00pm: Ray Hale Opening
1.30pm: Jennifer Dobson from Liverpool Museum will be giving a lecture based on "life history of the solifugid in captivity"
2.15pm: Paul Carpenter (BTS) "Home Sweet Home" A photographic record of tarantulas in the wild from his travels worldwide
3.15pm: Break for Tea, Coffee and cakes.
3.45pm: Boris Striffler "Funnel web Spiders of Australia"
4.30pm: Fernando Perez-Miles (Uruguay): "Sexual Biology and Natural History of Uruguayan Tarantulas"
5.30pm: Lectures finish.

Meet 6.45pm, Dinner at 7.00pm until late (or until you drop).
In the evening we shall be having a sit down hot fork buffet, if you would like to stay for the dinner, of which I am sure you will, there may well be a few surprises in store.

Also we have been given a special room rate for overnight stays if anyone is interested cost being:

£98.00 per double room
£75.00 per single room

This price includes full use of the leisure facilities and breakfast.

Friday Night Stay Special ~ Dinner, Bed & Breakfast ~ £128.00 Double / twin room or £85.00 for a single person.

Friday and Saturday Special ~ The stay for the Saturday night will be reduced to £85.00 double and single £62.00, but you must stay the Friday night at the above rates.

If you wish to stay please can you let me know as soon as possible so I can book a room for you?

Also if you would like to bring guests who may not necessarily like to come to the lecture but would like to have dinner with us this can also be arranged, the hotel will gladly allow the use of their facilities whilst the lectures are in progress. The cost for this would be £25.00 for the dinner only.

Plus Andrew Smith new lecture will perhaps unravel the mystery of B, baumgarteni is it real? or just a hybrid?
