  • Tarantula life-spans

Just wondering if anybody has any records of how long they have kept certain species? You often read in books that they live 12-15 years or so, but this seems to be a sweeping generalisation (based on one or two species that the author has kept).

Maybe I can compile a group-list in a future BTS journal?

As a start (all obtained as spiderlings/young and still alive):
    Grammostola rosea "red" - 8 October 1989
    Psalmopoeus cambridgei - 22 April 1992
    Chilobrachys sericeus - 8 November 1996
    Pandinus imperator - 14 June 1992
    Haplopelma sp. "aureopilosum" - 22 August 1995
    Hysterocrates gigas - 20 June 1996

I've also got data on others (which have died), but I'll have to go through my log-books.

Great idea Richard. Lifespan generalisations are all very well but I would like to know specifically how long I can look forward to my pets' company. I am new to the hobby and only purchased my 4 spiderlings - The Hobbits in mid November. All seem to be doing well and each has moulted twice so far.

Any information on predicted lifespans (male/female) would be most welcome for:-

    Frodo - G. spatulata
    Sam - G. pulchra
    Merry - B. auratum
    Pippin - B. smithi
