Hey guys and girls alike!
I was just thinking, instead of always 'hunting' eachother down at shows and things, why dont we all just post pictures of ourselves?
Will save a lot of effort LOL.
For example- at Newark, I was to meet Mary for some slings, and James Box to give him a lift home. Ended up standing next to Mary at Lee's stand for 10 mins not even realising until she collered me (literally HAHA) at a different stand later.
And as for James, well, we walked past eachother maybe 20 times before realising looooooool.
Anyhow, here is me and my sister, xmas eve (very drunk as you can tell from me falling over in the second pic)

Here is myself (the short one) and my husband (the slightly taller one) in full fancy dress from this New Year. In case you were wondering, we are leaders on a Christian youth camp and the theme for this New Year was 'Anything from the Bible', we are (obviously!) Noah and his wife!

BTW what's all this about these shows and events?

James Box

ah just keep your eyes open on the forum, mate...they'll be announcements for upcoming shows etc.
the BTS show, for example, is a big event held at a school in Coseley, West Midlands. traders set up tables and you can buy loads of animals and supplies at cheap prices. also, there are lectures and other attractions. a great way to meet fellow spider-enthusiasts!
there are loads of others, including bug shows and reptile shows, many of which also have the odd spider trader.

Whoa... that sound really great, but I don't think I will be able to go all the way up to the West Midlands from NW London, and I doubt I could ever convince my mum to take me! Maybe when I'm older, I'll still keep a lookout for announcements; are emails automatically sent out to every user of the forum?

nah, they're just posted in threads, and you can see on the main site.
i bet your mum would enjoy the trip! just tell her how educational it will be, and how it's great you're taking such an interest in scientific things;)
seriously, even if she doesn't fancy the T's too much, she'll love meeting people from this forum. we're a friendly bunch:D

Lol - I know you are! Yes, she knows I am into science, as my ambition for the majority of my life was to be a Patholagist, and I still do take great interest in forensics and Patholagy, but my main career option now is to be a film director and producer.
I'll try! Lol.

that pic reminds me of the 2 dogs one of my online friends owns. He's moved from Wales up to Scotland, staying near Falklands. He has 2 huskies, Avalanche and Blizzard and he kindly brought them along for us to see when we went to the Highland Games in Blair Atholl during the last week in May.
Beautiful dogs and I was intrigued by their eyes, I've got a better pic but here's one that's to hand:

Hay is it realy such a bad idea to get a blondie goliath as a starter spider?
if i was like real carefull n that,i intend to get a good few spiders when ive finished my learning curve reading books n scanning this site..:p

Peter Lacey
10-01-09, 01:13 PM
Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Good advice from experienced keepers, the correct tools (I'd definitely suggest a pair of large tweezers), a good tested set-up so that you don't have to keep changing things once the T. blondi is in its enclosure, and a little luck in finding one on offer and you should be fine. However, its not what I would consider the most obvious first tarantula species.

Brave man lol! if your going to go ahead like peter says get lots of good advice from experienced keepers!
Ive only been keeping T's around 7 months and in my opinion i dont think my experience so far warrants the respect these huge monsters need.
Good luck on your decision making

Lynn:)

maybe, if you wanted a big T as ur first one, why not try a salmon pink bird eater. Still just as big, but prob slightly easier to look after than a blondi? dunno if anyone else agrees with me?

Welcome to the forum Alistair. As Jason said, an L. Parahybana adult female is a good sized T, a lot easier to keep as it is not as aggressive or challenging, plus a hell of a lot cheaper. The T. Apophysis actually gets slightly bigger than the Blondi at 13"+ leg span, but are a slightly lighter build, but still very fast and aggressive also the hairs are very irritating and cause some people all sorts of problems, and would not recommend either of the Theraphosas as a first T unless purchased as slings or juves and then caution is still needed. :)

Hey Linda,
Yes from my research on the net they have the type 3 urticating hairs and some of the people i have spoke to on forums have had nasty experiences from the hairs! and if you are one of these people who are sensitive then it can cause excruticating pain (SPELLING lol ive had a few :p)
I recently read a thread where one guy ...not on this forum inhaled hairs accidentley and it was not good! i would honestly say learn with a couple of semi's before going on to the T.Blondi & T. apophysis.
Just my opinion :)

Cheers
Lynn

Urticating hairs are actually bristles with plenty of barbs in them. They are used by many New World tarantula as first form of defence, some are airborne and some are not. Many species lay down these hairs around their hide along with a thin layer of web. This serves as a natural deterrent against predators - I guess those poor rodents must get the occassional nose full of them in the wild.
We often come across them when doing tank maintenance so its recommended you wash your hands and arms afterwards and preferably wear a long sleeve shirt.
T. blondi and T. apothysis are renowned as having the most irritating hairs of any tarantula, but many of the giants also carry very irritating hairs including L. parahybana. Its one thing getting these in your skin its quite another getting them in the eye or throat where you'll probably require hospital treatment. A hands off approach and some common sense should easily get over this obstacle.
Many species of terrestrial tarantula can be kept quite easily with very similar requirements unless you intend breeding. T. blondi and T. apothysis however require a little more attention to detail including a higher humidity and moisture content. That's easily provided by regular spraying and moisture retaining substrate eg. coir, vermiculite and sphagnum moss, plus a large wide bowl of water. However, I have heard of people keeping them on dry substrate which seems alien to their natural habitats but just goes to prove how adaptable tarantula can be.
I wouldn't say either of these are especially aggressive but they do command respect. Clouds of irritating hairs are one form of defence but 1" fangs are the ultimate. Consider the bite of a cat and you'll probably realise the danger! Again, hands off remedies that situation.

Mrs Linda Street
11-01-09, 09:50 PM
Peter's pretty well summed it all up, but we would add that we've found both the Blondi & the Apophysis fast and aggressive, much more so than the L Parahybana, so it's long tweezers and beware of the hairs!!! :)

Hi,

My name is Adriana, but I go by Riana.

Pictures of me... oh dear...

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1659586&l=7ed75&id=647525142

My Gaming name is HellsBunny - and this picture represents that! lol

My albums are 'open' on facebook, and you are welcome to browse.

We have recently acquired three tarantulas.

2 x Slings
1 x Juvi.

One of my slings 'went missing'. No idea what happened to it. So now I'm getting a new Juvi - I feel rather terrible about the one that 'got away'. It could not have escaped - and I am not sure if maybe one of the visiting kids got hold of it while I turned my back. They are all in terariums now though, and NO CHANCE of anyone going in there without me knowing!!!

That is that really :)

It is nice to finally make it here.

I was a mechanic at the german flying navy for 6 years..
My plane wasn´t as cool as yours, but still nice.. It was the Breguet BR1150 Atlantic. Submarinehunter and Scout on the sea.. (with turbo-prop-engines)

Yeah, unfortunately most of my time is at the desk writing test pans, but I do get to travel to the test range for the actual tests themselves. That is very cool. I'm a Major (O-4). Yeah, our bases are little cities to themselves. I live on base and prety much everyhting I need is here. It's kinda nice. Although I do have to drive about 20 minutes to get to the pet store to buy feeders.

Aaron Knoblich
15-01-09, 08:04 PM
Wow you even have pet stores on base?
The bases I "visited" had three supermarktes, a bowling alley, a public swimming pool and much more.. Very impressing.
Just as your safety measures at the gates..
I was a Petty Officer second class (OR5) only.. Far away from your rank ;)

Greetings

KJ Vezino
15-01-09, 08:17 PM
No, sorry I should have said I need to drive 20 minutes off base to get to a pet store.

My base is very small, but so is my surrounding community. The nearby town is only 2500 people. That's why I have to drive so far to get to a pet store, it is in the next town past that, a city of about 15,000. Yeah, I'm pretty much out in the boonies. If I need to make any large purchases, like our recent computer, I have to drive an hour.

We have most everything that larger bases have, but our selection is a lot smaller.

Aaron Knoblich

If you have to drive an hour, you have enough time to enjoy your environment *g

Hello to all,

Ive just joined the website, and the fantastic world of tarantulas. I've always been fascinated by them, and think they are so beautiful. Circumstances have prevented me from having my own, (and ex partner who was terrified of them and then young babies in the house) but now my kids are a little older (18 months and 3yrs) I think it's time to get my first T. Luckily my 3 year old daughter agrees and she is now possibly more knowledgable than me about them. She has her heart set on a GBB, and often draws pictures of them and everytime she has her facepainted insists that it be not only a tarantula but: A greenbottle blue with lots of webs, they like webs"
We will be travelling down to the show in May as a family and hoping to get all the help and advice we need there (and who know's possibly make contacts to buy from), but most importantly looking forwarded to meeting a bunch of like-minded people in person!

Loving all the other recent newcomers pics - seem to be holiday pics! Scott, liking the headtowel, what country were you visiting? Also notice your in liverpool like me, do you mind me asking if you could advise on local places to buy live feed/equipment/etc from?

heres me:

and heres my daughter, withe one of her anatomically incorrect GBB facepaints

Hope they show up ok, as not very good with computers! Looking forward to getting to know everyone better here, and at the show.

Here is me looking very happy at a delicious menu.... followed by very disgruntled after said menu was taken away from us, due to a "miss-communication" between bar staff and kitchen staff in regard to serving times.... humph ;-)
