  • Ecdysis, Molting Lot!

    Just for the record, I decided to share my documentation on Grammostola Rosea shedding its skin in this forum.

    Maybe the picture is not that good, but roughly it helps to give the basic idea of what molting is.

    Biologically, ecdysis occur because chitin is a layer of skin that does not grow, so in order to outgrow, insects especially tarantula needs to shed their skin, and at the moment they shed, the new layer of skin are still soft which permits growth; the haemolymph are pumped from the abdomen to the entire body to increase leg span etc.

    But from what I've learn from my exhibition experience,
    The kids interpret molting in a different way, much more easy to understand.

    Why does tarantula molt?

    They need to change clothes, because the clothes does not fit them anymore.

    Metaphorically, the exuvium are regarded as clothes, it explain all the ecdysis process and sum it in one simple sentence.

    Here are the chronical pictures of the process;
