  • Does molting into adult male mean the enbd is in nigh?

My Chile rose molted recently and the other day I noticed something odd about the palps, and then on one of the front legs a definite hook, like a dew claw on a dog-Pip my female Chile rose is actually male!

Does that mean he is near the end of the road?

      Hi Larry
Congratultions to your male, he's come of age.
He's likely to feed much less but I find with access to a water bowl and the occassional small cricket most males survive much longer than some forums will lead you to believe. He's at his most productive for the first 6 months but its likely he'll survive for a couple of years with the simple proviso about. You're also likely to find him far more active.
I'd be tempted to post in a variety of forums to let people know you have a fresh male and hopefully you can find a female in waiting. You could go for a 50/50 on any resulting slings or just ask for a handful if successful. You also have the option of sending him out to several breeders and selling privately or to online suppliers eg. the Spider Shop, Predatory or Prey or Virginia Cheeseman. CITIES has banned export of this species so captive breeding is definitely to be encouraged for this tarantula favourite.

He will drive you nuts with the wandering around searching for a mate thats what they were put on the earth to do.

Maybe get yourself a lovely female Grammostola rosea and carry on the Pip genes with your own breeding adventure

Tis a shame, and as i've said else where ......
I know you're not into packing spiders or loaning out Larry, i think many will say this is a waste of a male as i do, but it's your choice at the end of the day. What about getting an adult female G rosea and having a go a breeding yourself? best of both worlds!
