Substrate replacement

Hi all,

I currently own two Tarantulas; Cora, my B.Smithi, and Tamesis, my G.Rosea. I think it's about time I replaced Cora's substrate, as it has bits of dead crickets in it, and I may as well give Tamesis a better substrate while I'm at it.

Tamesis I've had less than a week, and I want to replace her Temporary substrate as soon as possible.

I purchased a 10 litre bag of jungle bed, which was pretty expensive, and a 10 litre bag of Vermiculite. I plan to mix the Vermiculite and the jungle bed 50/50.

After this, my spider's enclousures will be complete at last, and I'll be skint.

Hi Chris,

Is that the jungle bed from Faunology? I agree it is a bit expensive, but a very nice substate. I currently use it for my adults, with some more chunks of orchid bark mixed in to bulk it out.

Might help if you dampen the vermiculite first, as it can get quite dusty whilst working with it.

Hey Adam,

Yep, it's definitely the one from Faunology.co.uk. That's the place where I purchased both my spiders from. I agree it's great stuff, but unfortunately, I had to throw the first bag out, because my first Chile Rose had died and may have had parasites and infections that could have transferred into it (I used the whole bag) plus the cork bark had ants in it, which also could've transferred. But since I sterilised the whole tank, that shouldn't be a problem anymore. The Chile Rose they sent me which replaced the one that died currently occupies that tank (Tamesis).

But there is one slight problem I have now; I spent all my money. Man, I need a job. My mother will help pay for the food. I think I'll just work in Asda. An easy option, as I'm a full time college student.

Did you tell them about the ants? I would have thought they'd replace it for you.

Good luck with a job; but you can pretty much guarantee that when you have some money you'll be spending it on more t's. Feed the addiction

Well, these ladies have had their tank makeovers. My B. Smithi kept on flicking hairs at me, feisty little wrench. She's going to moult very soon now, so I'll show you pics when it happens.
