I've read somewhere for terrestrial spiders its best to place the heat mat inthe lid of a tank,so the occupant can borrow deeper to avoid the heat. Is this true ?
Rather than in the lid, it is better to fix the mat to the outside rear of the tank with a covering of polystyrene to reflect the heat into the tank.
The idea behind this is that as you mention spiders burrow to escape excess heat & if they try this with a mat below the tank they end up burrowed to a point where they are sitting in higher temps rather than lower ones which is what they are looking for.
