  • Ok...Thanks to getting the thumbs up...I done it.......

    I've just bought a sub-adult 'Pterinochilus murinus'...

Its having its re-adjust period now...climbing...stopping..climbing some more...

Its settled in the corner now...and spun some web over the fake greenery...

DON'T WORRY...I'll be careful...I know how quick and nasty they can be at times...I'm real cautious...And i won't really 'poke it'...Honest...

I even bought a couple of 'pinkies' for future feeding...

The humidity is reading about 50%..and the temp is about 75F...so it should be ok...

    But...

Any advice would be very gratefully accepted...seeing as i have only ever had the more 'normal' T's...

Someone told me to get a pair of 'welding gloves'...Nearly put me off of buying it...

I am so glad i found this board...

Infact..im so glad...Im gonna join up and pay membership...

Looks like you guys have got me around for a bit longer...

"nasty at times" is an understatement these guys have a bad temper all the time, they also have increadible speed and can climb well as well we only ever open the feeding flap on ours after she escaped, she is never getting that chance again. As for maintianice keep it bone dry with water dish and it will thrive. Set the tank up as terestrial but allow enough substrate for it to burrow if it choses to do so. You should find it will setle in very fast and soon be comfy and eating within the week if not sooner, my guess is if you offer it food tomorrow it will take it, though you might not see it take or eat it. When it comes to cleaning or moving these T's welding gloves is not a bad idea alternitavley you can use a long ruler and a empty cricket tub and get it traped under the tub on the inside of the tank and then carefully slip the lid in place and click it closed before moving the tub away from the side of the tank. These guys are great escape artists and with their speed and climbing abilities can soon get away from you, and then your in the deep end trying to find and catch the thing. The worst bit is getting them out of their lair / burrow once that is done they play a tiny bit nicer but it is only a tiny bit. Expect it to flip onto its back and strike up at you, as well as repeatedly strike at you or anything you put in the tank to manipulate it. Thankfully once they are settled in their lair / burrow they tend to stay there unless they are hungrey when they will actively hunt for food so cleaning remains etc from the tank as long as they not to near the thing is ok as is filling up its water dish. If you dont already have them I would strongly reconmend a pair of long twezzers to help with tank cleaning safely.

            Sarah...

            Yes...I got long...very long tweezers...

            And...Wow...They are fast...

Already it's built a ground level tunnel of web...Now its seems to be building one up on the mesh top....

So far it appears that if you put your hand in there, slowly and keep a fair distance it dont move...

The only time it had a quick burst was when i accidently touched ( with the tweezers) one of the strands of web that stretched across the bottom of the tank...and then it was just to run deeper into the 'tunnel'..

            So far..so good...

Infact...its the most excitement i've had in years....

Yeah thats bout right its when you have to manipulate them they get pissy at you and boy then do you see there temper for what it really is then. Although From what I have seen mature males or the one we have is not quite so bad tempered as our mature female, or a juvinile.

                Sarah...

                Well..so far so good...

Im having trouble bringing the humidity down...its around 70%..

It built a web tunnel on the mesh lid...and then decided to live on the ground...

I've removed the web on the mesh lid, as im gonna need to go into the tank that way...and i dont want the T sitting where my hands are going...

I've no doubt it will probably just rebuild it...but it seems to prefer the ground one...its a proper tunnel now...

                Thanks..

sounds good bunk dont worry to much about the humidity it should sort its self out in time, just go easy on the water bowl for a few days that should help speed the process up. Your baby will take the water it needs from its food and the extra humidity.
