  • Suitable housing for adult T.blondi / apophysis?

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and just re-joined the BTS after an absence due to injury. I had to re-home my entire collection a year and a half back due to serious knee injury. I am starting to make a good recovery now and am going to start to collect a few T's again, now I am able to cope.
I was wondering what you guys n gals use to house adult T blondi / apophysis?
I had some lovely juvs in my collection but had to give them up before they reached maturity.

Thanks in advance for any advice

    Its good to be back

hi Mark welcome back my T.Blondi is a juvinille at the moment but im planning on keeping her is a plastic box that I got from Wilkinsons real cheap and large with a sealable plastic lid that I drilled holes in its like a giant tupperware the sort that you would keep childs toys in if you know what I mean the only thing is its not a good display tank
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

my 8''+ blondi is in a 3ft tank.the gap between the substrate and the top of the tank is around 12'',that wayshes not likely to hurt herself if she falls.

obviously you dont need a 3ft tank, before she was in a 15'' tank.

      hope this helps

        Thanks guys
Whats the best sort of lid to use on glass tanks?
My sliding glass door vivs wouldnt work I dont think, as I would have to bank the substrate. I.e it would be 2 - 3 inches deep at the front going to 8 - 10 inches deep at the back.
I guess some sort of custom made lid would be best for a tank, any tips appreciated!!

        Cheers

I have 2 adult females, 1 is in a 24" glass tank and is on show in the living room, 1 is in a large pet pal and is in the spider room. Both are around the 8-9" mark, I just remembered I have 3 not 2, the third one is in a large pet pal too, how can I forget a blondi????

I keep all my large South Americans in jumbo pet pals, there should be an article in an old BTS journal on T. blondi dont know if it is on the members stuff, i never get the time to get in there.

At the end of the day they are typical burrowing spiders, they sit near the entrance of thier burrows for food to come rarely going very far.

Your local one should be able to order in any size pet pal you want so just go talk to them and pick the one they do thats the right size.

Having trouble with my local petshop. biggest plastic tank they do is 14" L 9" W 9" H. And they have never heard of Pet Pals!
I would use a normal plastic container but I really want a display tank.
                  Would a 18" L 10" W 12" H glass tank be suitable?

                  cheers

That size should be fine but try find one with height being more than length or width, alternativley you could stand it on one end. Im surprised that your pet sho hasnt heard of pet pals. There are many places online you can buy them at reasonable price.

Thats great thank you. Didnt think of EuroRep :P
I'll order a few of the biggest ones. How deep would you advise having the substrate? I think the Maxi Pet Pal is 12 inches high. I know in the wild they can dig 24inch burrows, what is condidered the norm in captivity?
Also the lids seem very ventilated, should I cover some of the vents or does humidity retain well?

Cheers and thanks again for everyones advice!

I use these all the time and dont have any trouble with humidity but seing as blondi like extra humidity try covering half the lid or misting or keeping the substrate damper than in a glass tank to keep the levels right.

                              Thanks Sarah,

I'll try that out, what humidity do you aim for in your Blondi / Apophysis tanks? Do they both like the same humidity levels?
Sorry for so many questions, just want to make sure I provide the perfect enviroment. I'm mostly used to Slings, Brachys and some Asian burrowers.
So the big South Americans are new to me, in adult form at least.

                              Cheers
