  • Avicularia Avicularia for beginners?

    Hi all,

I currently have 2 T's and G.Rosea and a B.Vagans which i love dearly. I would like to own an arborial species and really like A.Avicularia's. From what i read these are considered a good arborial beginner species, but i would like to hear your thoughts as well.

    Thanks in advance! Glen

without doubt avic avics are the ideal starting out arboreal along with aviv metallica and a couple others. Avic versicolor and a couple others are worth waiting until gotten used to having arboreals. From then on, pokies, psalmopeous and many more to chose from there on.

Thanks for the quick reply Adam, they dont seem very common in the 2 'good' reptile shops near me. Maybe i will have to ask for one to be brought in specially. Cracking T's all the same and well worth waiting for in my eyes!

If anyone on here has a juvenile they are looking to re-home, please drop me a line!

      Thanks again Adam, Glen

GREAT! Thats the answer i was hoping for as i absolutly love these T's!

Right off to grab the phone to ring the local shop!

Do you have a piece of cork bark in your tank or do you have some form of branch?

I have a 22" high x 20" wide x 6" deep wall mounted display enclosure (totally unauthodox as its made of wood, as are all of my enclosures....and they have been for the last 30 odd years.... i'll probably get some flack for this but i like display cages for my T's and cant be doing with them being in boxes stacked in a bookshelf, probably the reason i keep my numbers down a bit or i would have 2' x 1' x 2' enclosures floor to ceiling )
There's a branch from floor to one back corner and the back wall is covered in plastic foliage (of which my Avics made a tube web out of some leaves) she seems very happy.

If that works for you Colin then thats fine! I like the idea of having a false planted disply unit which is also practical. I am looking to house my Avic Avic (once obtained) in a tall glass tank with a cork panel rear and use some of the false foilage like you have. Looks really good i think!

              Cheers, Glen

Just shot a quick image for reference.
Not THE most natural looking but it combines ease of cleaning and maintenance with enough things to keep her(?) occupied

peat / vermiculite substrate, spagnum moss for humidity (yes this harbours mites but the woodlice combat those, And its cheap to replace) a waterbowl for her to have a splash about in (strange but true)...thats it really...throw three or four locusts in a week and thats it.
The red bulbs on a dimmer switch for night time viewing...brilliant, better than TV !!!

p.s. the left cage is empty at the mo untill my little pokie moults

I really like your set up Colin! What a great way to use up shelve space!

You mentioned a water bowl for splashing in? Surely not? lol

How do you heat this tank?

The rooms a constant temp through day with a drop at night as we keep all the animals in it.
2 or 3 degrees out for a few species makes no real difference (reptile or invert)

And yes, i'm serious about the little runs through the water. She's even grabbed a locust off the surface when it dropped in there.
