  • Advice please

I am soon to be the proud owner of a Gammostola rosea. At present I am making sure I have all that I need for my Tarantula to be happy in her new home.

I know that she has recently (a few weeks ago) laid her eggs, but I am not sure about molting. Some people say she will molt soon others say you cannot know when she will molt. I am not worried but as I am new to keeping a Tarantula it would be nice to have some idea as to when they might molt or how many times a year this might happen. I think she is fully grown but not sure.

I am really glad I found this site its great, hope to become a member soon
(pay day!!!!) Love reading everyones comments and everyone is so helpful.

    Hi Barbara

If she is fully grown then she will only molt about once a year !
I have a few adults , and they have all molted in the last couple of months but im not sure if there is a time of year when they prefer to do it , i guess it depends when they were born and when they actually became adult !

If she has a bald spot on her abdomen , it will turn black when a molt is imminent , but unless you know when she last shed her skin , i dont think you can predict it !!

    Hope this helps !

      Advice please

Many thanks Neil, I will check her back when I get her home as I am not sure whether she has bald patch.

Getting a bit impatient now to get her can't wait. I have become quite addicted!!!!!!!!!

      thanks again

He he he, Barbara, I started with a G, rosea sling, just check out my signature to see what happened in the following few weeks!

I've only been doing this about a month or so.

Very very interesting and rewarding hobby though!

And as i have said before to other new users, some great people on here and all are very welcoming and there's some great advice to be had.

Can't wait to put some faces to names at the exhibition!!

Adult female Grammostola rosea sometimes only moult once every two years - so don't be too worried if it takes longer than you expect.

            Cheers,
            Richard

Both my G. rosea adult females weave a moulting mat when they're going to moult. It's very dense webbing on the floor of the enclosure or between the wall of the container and their hide. It's a dead giveaway. They also refuse food for ages before a moult, so that's another clue.

You can see the webbing underneath her just as she starts to moult.

Anyway good luck, and enjoy your new spider

                  Thanks

Many thanks to all who replied. My Internet has been down all morning so could not reply. (I'm now at work he he) I'm lost without my internet and mobile phone.

Hope to be able to post pics of my new T when I get her home, looks like next Thursday as I am on holiday then.

The room I am putting her in is upstairs and the temperature is about 70 - 75 thats with the heating on, but it is quite a warm room as the boiler is in there do you think I need a heat mat as well? They have a small heat mat in her tank at the pet shop and she is always sitting on it, but the temperature in the tank there is 60. I wondered if this was a bit cold for her?

Will have to go somebody wants something Honestly anyone would think I was here to WORK!!!!!!!!

                  Thanks again
