  • My Red Rump has just died :(

I checked on her this morning , as i do all my T`S and saw that she was on her back , albeit in a strange position . So , i thought , she`s finally gonna molt !! as she was the last of my T`s that were due .

Got home tonight , eagerly rushed to the tank to she her in all her new beauty , only to find she was in the same position as i left her !

She hadnt moved at all so i decided to have a closer look at her , and to my horror it dawned on me that she had died

On close inspection she seems to have a small hole at the end of her leg and a wierd patch underneath her abdomen!

Im now thinking that she has died through a fall but her abdomen is still very large and full to suggest she hasnt lost a lot of fluid !

Maybe she has flipped over and a cricket has eaten her leg ? , i couldnt see any in the tank tho ....... either way, shes gone and im very upset about it

ive posted some pics but they arent very clear im afraid

She could have died during moult, it is not a nice thing to happen but it is quite commen ( or so i have heard ) thats what it looks like to me However how old is she i cant relly tell by the photos how big ..?? Coz it could just be old age..

Heres what 'The Tarantulas keeper's Guide' by Stanly A. ScHultz and Marguerite J. Schultz. Says:
Molting is the most crucial act that a tarantula performs. Once it begins to moult, it must complete the process or die.
The three resons that it suggests why this might have happend is that
        1. = Dehydration
        2. =The tarantula was just to slow
        3. = it just simply got stuck

I'am sure if iam wrong someone will tell you but that is what it looks like to me,
        Dan.

          Thanks

she was fully grown and seemed in perfect health

it doesnt look like she was even starting to molt tho , and to be honest , the position she was in didnt look right because she was on her side and her legs werent outstretched like they usually would be

i cant work it out and im gutted

            Hello Neil.
I`m very sorry for your losses
I think dehydration would be wierd, with that abdomen.
Have you check her for parasites?

              Hello Neil!

Sorry for Your loss and for the die of this beautiful "red-rump" not ordinary looking from the pic... what a shame! ;(
Tell please, the exact conditions You have kept her - I believe some cases may be happens like this due to a very high humidity - does the substratum were kept humid?

P.S. Do You have a good pre-mortem pics of her?
              All the best,

                Hi Mikhail

If you look at my thread on the second page " My Collection " .... there is a pic of her taken only one week ago , and as you can see she looks very healthy .
Ive kept her on vermiculite all her life and she has always been a good eater , regular molter and never aggressive . The humidity in the tank is never excessive , shes always had a water bowl and has always been very active.

                Its a mystery
