  • New one ordered

Since I am unable to attend the BTS exhibition I decided to treat myself and have just ordered a 2 - 3cm C. cyaneopubescens sling

Obviously it wont be sent until tomorrow so should be here on Friday so I have a couple of questions.

    1. What depth of tub should I use (I have a few tubs with different depths)

    2. How much substrate to put in (do they need a little bit extra height above the substrate compared to my G. 's and B. 's)

All my others are terrestrials and have burrows but this one likes to web up so is there anything important needed? I know they like it on the dry side so a bit of misting how often?

I just wasnt to have eveything ready well before it arrives. I have read the care sheet for adults but can those of you who have slings let me know how you have things setup?

    Thanks
    Elaine

I just bought the last one from the Tarantulashop.co.uk. I had been looking at other places but none had any. The T shop was my last effort and honestly didnt expect to find one and there it was. I cant stop grinning

I fouind this care sheet when i was considering buying one, it seems to cover most options including a little bit about slings

I'm sure you'll get first hand experience from someone on here though (i think Mike H and Johanna both have them to name but two)

I've kept mine in a semi-arboreal setup. Whet it was a sling I kept it in a peanut butter jar, now that it is over 3" it is in a 1 gallon or so plastic jug. It has more height than width and seems to be doing fine. It could use more width, but I don't think it is necessary. But yes, even in a terrestrial type setup they should be given extra height and some structures to climb an attach webs to. They usually don't web up right away, but when they do they go all out. Mine has built several different platforms or "floors" in its cage and uses them all at different times. I give it minimal substrate. I never provide water or mist at all, I just feed them like crazy and they get all the water they need from their prey. The come from one of the driest climates that Ts do come from. An occasional mist is fine, as they have a morning fog in nature, but I've never found it necessary.

I have a 4" sub adult, and I keep it in an exo terra 30x30x30. Very dry substrate but I do have a water bowl in, however she does end up webbin the bowl up and having read other threads on the GBB Im considering getting rid. I have about 4" of substrate and some structure for webbing and she really has gone to town!!!

On anther note, if you looking for something that webs heavily can I suggest a C. fasciatum. I bought a 2cm sling from the spidershop and I've never really seen it, but it does come out at night and ad more webbing!!!

Welcome to the C, cyanopubescens owners club! lol

Very nice T's an grow like stink, mine moulted again yesterday and doesn't seem any time since last one!

Keep dry as desert dwelling species, like it very warm too. Web up like crazy and mine is currently sat on a little platform it has spun for itself with a little tunnel for easy access up and down from the substrate.

Seem a good display species as mine only used it's hide when it was settling in, spends most of it's time sat out in all it's beautiful and colourful glory!

You'll be chuffed to bits when you get it!

Oh, and it eats like a horse!

I keep mine on a couple of inches of dry substrate with a peice of cork bark sticking up in the middle of the tub for it to attach its webbing to. I only mist the web occasionally incase it wants a drink and it is doing well. Absolutely beautiful as slings and adult. Congrats.

Congratulations Richard I'm so glad you are getting one. We can swap information on what we learn during growth etc.

Thanks everyone your replies have been very helpful. I have the tub almost ready with about 2" of substrate (now dried out) a couple of small pieces of cork bark and I will go and find a couple of twigs in the garden and get them washed and dried.

I have my other slings in their seperate tubs inside a larger tank with a heatmat on the back. They are in the middle of the tank so should I put this little one a little bit closer to the heatmat? I will try checking temperatures in different areas of the tank later.

I have read that they can be fast and skittish but not aggressive. Have you found this true with yours?
Anything else I need to know?

                          Thanks again
                          Elaine

ps. You knew I would end up with more didnt you Johanna? lol

A little fast and skitish but not to bad in an emergancy they can be handled and picked up by hand as long as you stay calm and dont spoke them into running. It should be fine anywhere in the tank you have set up mine all did fine at normal T temps, considering its such a small sling it might want to burrow for bit till it gets a bit bigger so you might want to add a tad more substrate just for now it can always come out later on if it shows no sign of burrowing or in a moult or two time when its past the burrowing time. Mine always had the odd mist and when they were big enough acess toa water bowl and seemed to like ( in as much as a T can like anything ) knowing it was there for them if they wanted it I certainly dont remeber them filling in and destroying their bowls like my brachys do.
