  • A.geniculata Love

We mated our female A.geniculata this evening with the male we picked up at the show.
They have been drumming to eachother on the shelf all week since we got him and the female seemed very receptive. We put the male into the females tank at the other end of from the female. As soon as she felt his footsteps she started drumming loudly. The males drumming was like a low rumble, and when the female responded with either loud drumming with her legs or inaudible drumming with her palps the male edged a few steps closer. She didn't flinch when his legs came into contact with hers and he attempted several times to lift her up to get an insertion, but as she was sitting on top of her plant pot hide, he couldn't lift her high enough. After a few failed attempts we removed the plant pot so they were on the same level, and this proved more succesful. He managed to lift her up and get right underneath her, even tipping her on her back towards the end. He got atleast one insertion, but shedidn't like being tipped over and hissed a bit, and he (rather sensibly) left it at that.
We will probably try again in a couple of days, although she might be quite close to moulting. This hopefully won't prove disastrous as he only moulted to maturity about 5-6 weeks ago, so he will still be viable after her moult.
Pics aren't great as the room was dull and I couldn't really get close enough for macro mode, but was a bit too close for normal mode.

    Good work,Richard

A tip I can offer is putting a piece of burried cork bark in. and remove the pot.

This will allow her to back onto the corkbark without it moving and give him greater leverage.

    Hope this helps

Cheers Ray, I might try that in the future. I did notice he was more succesful when she had backed up against the glass allowing her to brace herself with her legs.

How simple !?!....logged that idea for my Grammies

It's like living with Ringo starr, Ian Paice and Cozy Powell at the mo with all the drumming going on.

No matter how much you pick up over the years, you never stop learning !!!

        Thanks Ray
