  • postage fatalities?

I'm so gutted my 3 slings arrived this morning and the B smithi had some fluid on the tissue it was in and was hardly moving. I just checked and it is still alive but dont think it will last much longer. What could the liquid be? and how many of you have had slings arrive in the post only to be DOA as I have only heard good things about them being sent through the post.
P.S. both the other slings are fine as were the 2 original spiders and my brothers he got from the website.

    Hi Abi.
My L parahybana sling came through the post and when I opened the package the tissue it was in was stained with fluid. I feared the worst so I checked it over as best I could Then just hoped for the best now its fine not a sign of anything wrong so I put it down to poo. Dont be too hasty to fear the worst just keep an eye on it and hope for the best. If it turns out that it is injured get the superglue out.

    regards

Sorry to hear that Abi, I do hope it's okay. I would get in touch with the place you bought it from just in case it does die. explain to them what happened so that if it does they may replace it.

        Good luck.

          what a shame,
i always had my reserves about posting insects and have never posted one yet myself, but after reading about forum members deliveries my opinion changed, as everyone said the spiders were excellently packaged and got there in good order. Some members on here have had literally hundreds delivered with no loss.
I'm not sure what the scenario is with a replacement but like Harry said there's no harm in contacting the supplier for advice.

          Good luck

OF all the spiders i have ever recieved through the post less than 0.01% have ever been damaged.

What i have noteced with some packing is that there is to much of it, as long as the spiders have something to hold onto and there is about 1cm of movement inside the container, then they should be OK.
If the person you boughtthen from is OK they should be willing to repalce them. IF NOT find out why not???

I emailed them yesterday afternoon with no reply. I read all the terms and conditions and I should be able to get a replacement T. I'm just going to have a look to see if there are any contact number.
Checked the B smithi this morning and it is still in the same posision I left it. It doesnt look dead but I am concerned as it is out in the open and has been there since yesterday. Do you think I should I try and move it?

I've had only one DOA, a B.Boehmei sling. There was no fluid or apparent damage, personally I think that cold, stress or being knocked about got to it.

I wasn't sure it was dead for a few hours so just observed it. With no movement I eventually prodded it gently, and it did nothing -thus proving in my mind, it's demise.

I tipped it out onto my hand to give it a last chance, not a twitch!

The place I bought it from sent replacement very soon after. I needed only explain.

Hi Abi. Look at it this way, as long as there is a flicker of life there is always a chance of it pulling through. just observe for now and do what you can for the little beast it may take a while. I think you will know when it has died.

                  Best of luck.

For All of You not to be so sad, last year I lost near 100 spiders, including adult and spiderlings, and some other arachnids too due to a postage. They simply went out from England and never arrived to Russia...
But sure, even an 1 spiderling loss sucks... ;(
                    All the best,
                    Mikhail from Russia

Yeah he has good point any descent dealer, seller, breeder should replace any DOA.

wow, my sympathies, Mikhail! that must have been really disappointing.

hope your little one pulls through, Abi... let us know.

                            Unfortunatly that is highly debatable.

Despite correct packaging the moment you've posted that package it's then in the hands of the postal service....and not all spiders within the same species are hardy individuals.

If you can see that the packaging is professionaly done and the spider is still dead then thats something you'll have to live with.
However if the packaging is shoddely thrown together then of course the seller should compensate after you have described to them how to correctly send spiders through the post.

most dealers guarantee live on arrival, so mayhaps not that debatable.

generally supplier would have decent stock for which to replace the occasional doa, i believe due to the rarity of doa a replacement isnt out of the question.
All those legs and not a pair of shoes in sight... Nice tarsus tho...
