a very interesting and beautiful species you got there Craig. I would ussually expect a Tarantula to eat all the others in it's cage but for once there seems to be an exception.

I think there will be a waiting list for these spiders...

Either way I'd still love some.

I wonder if in the future these will become readily available in the hobby?

    Awesome pics by the way.

ive just built a viv of those dimensions a couple of weeks ago, which i was setting up as a study enclosure, its even got an IR camera so i can record the activitys that go on in the night.

i hope i can have some slings from you as they would be absolutely amazing to study.

    Hi Abi,

I keep them in a huge 4x2x2ft tank with a giant burrow just like in the wild. They use every inch proactively. Ideal anyone that kept them would give them the same space.

Oh ewls! I wonder how commoin this spider is in the hobby- we need more captive breds and less WCs.

    Hi all,

There could well be any opportunity soon as I am prepared to distribute to a few to responsible owners who have the time and space to look after and breed these creatures.

    here are some more pictures

More chicken spider pics from the wild.

Notice how the spiderlings hang around the entrance and always in close contact with Mum.

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for letting me know, I look forward to Martin's comments. Any idea when he'll return?

I suspect the area is still being stripped for the dead trade. A real shame!

    Regards
    Craig

Martin is on Holiday at the moment, a few years back Martin supplied a dead specimen to Andrew Smith, and there were also legally exported live specimens in a USA University, as part of the study of the symbiotic relationship between the tarantula and a narrow mouth frog / toad. Etc.

Also a large number were strip mined from the area either for the dead trade or may have just made it out alive this is anyone’s guess. Needless to say this is a very interesting species and any description that has been made on this may not have taken in to account the one which sits in a jar at the BNHM.

I am sure Martin can be more specific on the dates, but I personally know he has been working on this since 1997-8. I am sure he would be taken part in this thread if he was not on holiday.

    Great pictures BTW.

    Regards
    Mark
