  • Too funny (B. vagans)

I was giving fresh water to all my T's and my little 3 inch B. vagans (bigger than I thought now I've seen it out and about) turned towards the water dish just as I started pouring water. She pounced on the dish and got a bit wet

I then tried pouring a bit more carefully so she jumped on the dish and got a little bit more wet lol

I have the camera in 1 hand and water bottle in the other so I asked my daughter to carefully move Bob (my son named her) out of the way with the soft plastic tube. Sarah gently toughed Bob on the back leg and she jumped round pounced on it.

Then decided to try and munch on it lol

So we took the tube out slowly and gave her 2 crickets to keep her happy. She grabbed both crickets and was happily munching while I got her water sorted. She was fed 2 days ago on 3 crickets and jumped on this 2 like she hadnt been fed lol.
Funny wee soul cracked me up lol.

    Hi Elaine

she is gorgeous! is it my eyes playing tricks, due to the colour of your water bowl, or does she have a blue tint to he legs?! i was sure vagans are all black with a red rump?

I'm sure she was only making sure the water was dead before she drank it!

        Hi Colin
I think it could be due to the flash when taking the photo's. Here is another with the flash followed by 1 without the flash.

This little one was left on my doorstep and it was a lass in the petshop that said she looked like a B. vagans. Once I saw pics, she looked like one to me too but you never know.

          HI Elaine

Just thought i would let ya know i think the lady in the petshop was right,
I had a look in my T book and it says..."It is basically a black tarantula with grayish outer segments of the legs,a glossy black carapace, and a black abdomen densely covered with bright red/orange hairs."...

I think the blue i am seeing is the grayish outer segments of the leg turning blueish with your flash!
Plus its nice to here you've found a pet shop worker who actually knows what they are talking about! i've heard lots of stories about bad petshop workers.

            Thanks Colin

Its kind of hard to see in the pics but the legs are all black and the abdomen hair is more blonde than red as are the longer hairs on the back legs. Her carapace is also a bit light in colour. The flash is causing the bluish colour where the light hits the legs but they are definitely all black.

The girl in the petshop said "it looks like a red rump" which helped not a lot so I did a search on the net and found B. vagans which looks to be the most similar.
The growth after her moult has surprised me too. She has added at least an inch maybe very slightly more. My B. emilia was the same size and both have moulted within a day or 2 of each other and the B. emilia is much smaller.

I'm thinking possible hybrid. I dont know lol

She could well be a hybrid Larry. There seems to be a lot of them around

I dont mind what mine is so long as her care is right.

Mine looks like that too, a kind of steely/metallic blue hue more prominent just after a moult.

But I wouldn't be too distressed over identity looks like pretty much every other B vagans I've seen lol

I have heard hybridisation is common, but how easily identifiable I wouldn't know.

And for the record mine's a scatty nutter too
All those legs and not a pair of shoes in sight... Nice tarsus tho...

                        Hi Robert
The blue colour only shows with the flash on my camera. She looks really black in natural light. Her abdomen hasnt got the really red hairs that I see in most pictures and are more redish/blonde.

It would be nice to know what she really is but not the end of the world. I'm just curious more than anything. I did see a pic of a B. sabulosum that looks like mine but who knows

I'm not going to breed from her so it doesnt really matter.

looks beautiful...too bad it's just a flash affect.
