  • Discouraging ants from T tanks; fluid that won't evaporate as 'water barrier'?

I'm heading out the day after tomorrow for vacation for two weeks. My apartment has little ants. I've set the tanks up in trays full of water to act as a moat. This prevents the little ants from getting into the tarantula tanks.

But in the two weeks I'll be away the water in the moats will have evaporated after about a week. Can anyone recommend a fluid that will not evaporate? The tanks are sealed at the bottom. If the fluid is toxic it won't enter the tanks. I was thinking automotive antifreeze. But I don't have time to search the stores for that. Basically any common fluid that won't evaporate.

    Thanks, Chris.

I put my tanks on a plastic table and put the legs of the table in tall buckets. They haven't evaporated completely in 6 months

Good lord. Do you know that your response to my OP arrived within less than 60 seconds after I posted?

Yes, that's a very good idea. The table has four legs and buckets are available. Thanks very much. Saves alot of running around.

The solution is neat and works well. Also, with a little care on your part, it isn't very messy.

I'd put the tanks on a table and put something greasy and horrible like Vaseline all over the table legs. It would be mucky wiping it and all the dead ants stuck to it off when you get back from holiday, but the spiders will be happy!
