  • Fly I.D Help needed.

    Hello

Does anyone know what this little chap is?

Sorry about the image quality, my camera is being pushed over it's limits here.

Any help would be gratefully received.

    Best regards

Thanks Neil, I really hope it's nothing to worry about. I saw it scuttling across the sub in the tank.

            Another specie

I found another type of fly this morning, I've done my best to i.d and it looks very much like a fruit fly. I hope I don't find any more, especially the phorid variety!

if you keep having fly problems you could always invest in a natural fly disposal unit (carnivorus plant).

That is a fabulous idea! You've resurrected an old desire of mine to have venus fly trap! I wonder if the apartment is warm enough? Hmmm the mind cogs whirr and spin! thanks Lee.

I agree with Mark. Looks like a fungus gnat. Antennae are too long for it to be a phorid.

If it has hooks on the end of its abdomen, then it's a male one

Any chance of a close up of a wing?

                    Hi Phil,

Thanks very much for the reply, I have kept the fly and will be receiving a high quality macro photography set up next month, my current camera was pushed to its limits on previous photo, I'd be more than happy to provide you a much better shot when the new gadgets arrive.

                    Cheers again mate.

ah mate, I've been dying to get my mits on a decent macro rig, have a butchers at the incoming goodies!

                        Canon EOS 30D
                        EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM
                        Sigma 150mm Macro Lens
Sigma EF-500 DG Super S-TTL Shoe Mount Flash + Macro bracket

Ideally two flashes would be better but the finances are now depleated.

There's going to be some top quality shots of my spider too.

                        All the best

                          Good choice of kit mate,
didn't think it would be long before you took the plunge and went macro.
You're not going to blame this outlay on me are you?
when you're back in the black at the bank invest in a ringlight, they're fantastic when shooting in macro.

Ha ha! Hi Colin, I wouldn't dare hold you responsible mate, I've had this hit list for the past two months. The camera has already arrived in Brum back home and the lens is on its way. My folks are visiting in Finland next month and bringing it over for me. Saved a bucket load buying it all from the U.K, I would have payed double if I bought it from here!

As for the ring light, a good friend of mine recomended using flashes with brackets, I think I'll have a go at both normal flash guns and rings when I'm not so broke, do things from all angles kinda thing.

Have a look at this picture he took:

                              Ahhh, twin flash brackets....with you!!
I sometimes use two little cobra slave flashes either side of the lens when using extention tubes, i use the camera inbuilt flash to trigger them, you have to have everything on manual though.

                              Good piccie that!!

                              Chat soon mate
