  • Anyone been bitten? did you take pictures...?

This is a request for help from a TV project I am working on for National Geographic.

The lurid pictures (usually of L. reclusa) spider bites are all over the internet and are inappropriate for the documentary that we are making on Theraphosa.

We are looking to illustrate that the bite from even a large theraphosid, while painful (believe me, I know!) it is highly unikely to be serious and almost certainly not fatal.

Does anyone have pictures of the effect of a tarantula bite (preferably on the hand or arm) that can be used in the programme?

If anyone can help, please let me know - I'll send you a release form and you will get a credit on the show!

    Martin

Are you wanting fresh bite photo's Martin, or do you require any photos of scarring to show "minimum" lasting effects.
Have a finger with a 20 year old Selenocosmia lanipes single puncture wound scar available to photograph if needed
Don't forget to learn what you can, when you can, where you can.

(webmasters note to readers and the tabloid press: This is not the results of a tarantula bite, no tarantula can cause such effects)

that bite doesn't look all that bad! ...not the intensely ugly pic above, but the one on the other forum

The pic above Neil, is that L. reclusa? As far as I am aware no tarantula produces necrotic venom And Sicarius hahnii venom is far worse than this.

I got the joke, I actually thought its was very funny!..
Just had add a note because out forum is used by many papers and magazines as there place to find info.

I could see it now, that picture added to a tabloid story and quoting the BTS as reference.

So no problem OK... all great fun as far as I am concerned, but jokes like this have to have a disclaimer on.. OK.

                      All the best
                      Mark
P.S It is a recluse bite

Its ok Neil, I'm not upset, in fact considering the fun I had finishing my sandwich when I first saw it the joke is definitely on me! Next time I'll try cheese instead of corned beef and mayonnaise!

                            Neil,
have seen this picture as part of a series documenting the effects of a bite from Loxosceles reclusa, i think this was the last picture in the series showing the full extent of the dermatological effects of this spiders bite.

                              bit nasty indeed, what?

there was some article from the sun (who else) with a picture of a P. imperator scorpion, and labelled it a "killer" because some guy in an Asian country (African species, the emperor!) got stung, apparently, and ended up dying, more than likely due to a crap hospital.
but yeh, it doesn't take much for the fear-mongering media to stir things up.
