  • I am incredibly lucky!!

I just had to experience the horror that is every tarantula keepers worst nightmare, and yet escape the problem without any trouble.

All of my t's are kept in custom aquaria tanks, or the spiderlings and small juvies are kept in screw top containers. The excpetion being my large juvenile P. murinus (RCF), which is temporarily in one of those stackable plastic containers where part of the lid can be lifted up, while the rest remains fastened.

I just got back in from a meal out, walked in to my bedroom and turned the light on to see the lid was open on one side. I had clearly not clipped it down properly and it had opened up. My first thought was "oh sh*t...." but while walking over to the container i was trying to reassure myself with the knowledge that it rarely ever leaves its webbed side of the box. Alas, there was no orange spider!

Now i have just moved back from uni having finished my masters and haven't unpacked properly yet so my room is absolute tip, there is stuff everywhere all over the floor. It could have been absolutely anywhere. I started looking around the table where the container was hoping that it hadn't gone far yet, but again no sign. Now i was really starting to panic, of all my T's to escape, this was clearly not the one i would want escaping.

Just as i was contemplating how i was going to break the news to my family (who are far from keen on me keeping so many anyway) and start the process of moving everything out of my room item by item, i turned round and there it was on the wall above the door. It was the complete other end of the room from where its container was. It had been on a very long journey in just a 2 hour time frame. It was easily caught and is now back in its container. Until i can move it to a better tank, i have taped over the edges of the box.

I have always had the belief that you would have to be very careless to allow a tarantula to escape, and i have always been very strict with myself to prevent it ever happening. It just shows no matter how careful you are, these things can still happen. The only time in 6 years, and hopefully the last! Phew!

Well the threat has always been "if one ever escapes, you have to get rid of them all". So i am obviously glad that they will never know. People always wonder how i have no problem sleeping in a room full of tarantulas. I just say they're in containers so it's not an issue. I definitely would have had an issue sleeping in here knowing a P.murinus was wondering around.

I nearlly had a fit when he said it was an obt, luckily he found it not to far from his tank 'phew' *wipes sweat from brow*.

that's well lucky Greg! glad you get to keep your T's! just hope your family doesn't lurk on this board

Jay, that's hilariously cute!! "come on out, Howie!" i love it!

my one escapee so far, which also was caught without hassle albeit two days after the escape, was my C. darlingi! it just had to be that one!
i just thought it was in its web until i decided to check...
          yikes!
found it in a clear plastic bag which was easily picked up without scaring the spider, so was a lucky break!

even after your story Greg, i still REALLY want a P. murinus!!!

I have a large Female P.murinus which i had enough trouble changing tanks...
That said, I dont think i'd like to wake up with her on my pillow ( for sure!)
All my African baboons have something heavy on the lids!

I learnt my lesson from an escapee P.regalis!

Pterinochilus have a habit of doing that. Mine escaped when I was about to send him off for breeding a couple of months ago and headed for the nearest dark space. The spider decided this was up my skirt! I'd just come out of hospital and didn't think a Pterinochilus murinus bite would do me any good so ended up with the spider chasing me round the blooming living room. Talk about embarrasing. Needless to say I wasn't bitten and the spider went off to breed, though goodness knows how!

lol guess he must've had a crush on you! shame it'd never work...the difference in the number of legs for one thing, not to mention the lack of a steady job and short life expectancy of a male tarantula...
but we don't choose who we fall in love with!

Poor spider! he did a good job when he finally got where he was meant to be though. Idon't think he had a crush, he was just looking for something to bite!
