  • Hello every one!

Hello! Im new to the world of tarantulas and im sure i will be better with them than i am with computers!!! Im hoping to get my first chile rose (sub adult) within the next wek to 10 days,so i hope you can be patient with me,as i find some of the latin names a bit confusing just now!
My 2 daughters 12 & 1 are looking forward to patter of tiny feet -
they say it will make a change from dogs & ferrets! Im glad to see people
name their spiders,as everything gets named in our house!
Would appreciate advice on what to look out for when i get my tarantula!.

Hi Kirsty and welcome to the forum.

Its nice to see another Scot here and it seems we have a few things in common. I also have 2 dogs, 1 ferret and 2 teenagers

The Grammostola rosea's (Chile rose) are a lovely tarantula. Mine is only 1.5 inches just now and as sweet as can be. I have names for most of mine but with 31 at the moment its getting tougher to choose names. I have another 10 arriving tomorrow I'm still learning the scientific names yet so dont worry if they are a bit confusing to start with.

    G. rosea's like their substrate dry but do provide a waterdish and hide. The main things you will have to watch out for is the hairs they sometimes fire off. They can be rather irritating.
The best things you can do is just to read some of the posts here on the forum. There is loads of information in them.
I will look forward to photo's of your new lady.
    Elaine

                Hi Kirsty

I just got my first, a g rosea on Saturday and havent left her tank side since (apart from to go to work!) She is ace! I would advise Stanley Schultz's 'The Tarantula Keeper's Guide'. Available on Amazon. Very detailed but so informative. Also, Barron's 'Tarantulas and other Arachnids' was also quite good.

Welcome from one newbie to another!

Let us know when you've got your rosie

Tarantulas and Scorpions in captivity by Russ Gurley.

I personally think this is best entry level book on Tarantula keeping. It is new and upto date.
