But goin on abdomen size would only be "viable" if it was mature... and its not otherwise (if it is male) he would have hooks etc :P

I'd say wait til u get a moult

i wouldn't do that...the evidence seems to suggest that over-feeding leads to bad moults and shortened life-spans in some cases. it's not worth the risk.
if it's male, you especially shouldn't overfeed or it'll die that much sooner. enjoy its youth!

                      Emilia.

I would say male judging by the small 'dent' or apperture between the first set of book lungs.I remember this as a belt buckle-to hold up a gents braces! The only sure way to tell is to get the microscope out and examine an exuvia from the inside between book lungs.

I base my opinion on this

Note: my pics are of B. smithi and there's probably slight differences, but it's still a female.

It requires a certain touch. You have to hold it tight enough that it can't get away, but not too hard to crush it or separate leg joints etc.

Well, if you can tell from those pictures and claim 100% accuracy, then you are far better spider keepers than I am!

For me - the only way to really say for sure is visable male hooks, or the flap shown in the abdomen of a female moult near the epigastric furrow. Other than that (in my honest opinion) you are completely guessing!!
