agreed.....at least a dozen each !!!!
*edit*
Jason
Just noticed the size of your tank compared to the size of spider. a 2ft x 1ft floor area tank may be a bit extreem for a 2 inch spider.
i personally like to give my spiders a little extra room than is "the norm" but not that much.
Maybe you could get a divider fitted and halve the size, this would be fine for even an adult smithi
Plus then you have a spare tank for another spider !!Don't forget to learn what you can, when you can, where you can.

perfect information chaps and chapesses. cheers.
i know my tanks big, ive got this size so i dont have to get another when its fully grown. but putting a divider in i suppose could be a good idea. you think its really neccary tho? i mean in the wild they'd have much more space than what ive given it? would it be bad leaving it as the full size? surely not??
and Elaine. thank you for that info on the mat and the substrate. ill get to work making sure it isnt too damp. so cheers for that.
hopefully with all your help, my b. smithi will be all happy and feeling at home soon.

The main census on the "Big tank - Small spider" scenario is that it's hard for it to find the food item you put in.
I know in the wild they have endless space to wander about in but usually they're down a burrow all their life or under a rock / log etc etc and just wait untill the food (of which i would assume there is usually more than just one item) passes close by.
The spiders i have of that size are kept in 8" x 6" hatchling boxes, some people think thats a little too big even still. the only spider i have in that size tank is a L paharybana (salmon pink bird eater for a common name) this tank is garnished with rocks, stones, logs etc etc over the floor so there's not a lot of open space left.
I would use a divider that you can move along as the spider gets bigger.Don't forget to learn what you can, when you can, where you can.

ok, ive removed my smithi, removed everything form inside and squeezed out as much water from the substrate, and it feels much dryer. sorted out the tank a bit. removed some of the foliage as there was quite a bit, and put the heat mat behind the tank as recommended. theres no humidity stuff at the mo. but the lids ive made have only just been put back on. so i wouldnt expect any to be visible. just got a themometer onthe substrate. gonna check that later. se wot it reads.
it still tried to climb the side. but not up to the top. might just be cos it was a tad startled as its just been rehoused. its now sitting well... kinda sitting in a corner on some platic leaves after just coming down the wall. so just gotta wait. any other recomendations??
and i will try get some kind of divider soon. im sure ill be able to find something.

If you're intent on keeping it in the large tank, one more thing you may consider is to move all logs, rocks, hides, water bowls etc etc from the edge of the tank to the centre area just in case it climbs up to the top and falls. they're quite fragile and can rupture themseves or break legs with a long fall onto a hard surface, it wont be too bad on substrate.
alternatively fill the whole tank with deep substrate up to 4-5 inches from the top. and put some plastic plants around the edge to give it something to climb on and grip.
Sorry if i sound like a broken record about the tank size but, i've learned from experience, not all good experience either.
The main thing is to enjoy your new spider, and from your posts it looks like you're willing to provide the best for it.

well ill move the plastic plants further in towards the centre then.. well, away from the edges. and i will (as soon as i can find sometihng to divide it, i will divide the tank)
and of course im gonna try to provide the best for it. im sure everyone here hates people that buy ... well any animal and just plonk it down expecting its gonna be fine. looking after things takes time and you need to be able to do whats right. if i need to talk to fellow tarantula enthusiasts to make sure mine is gonna be looked after right, then thats whats im gonna do. cheers for your help all
(oh and at the moment at least, i can't fill the tank up by inches and inches. i just dont have that much substrate at the moment. its 1.5 and 2 inches.. in some places nearlly 3 inches thick. so that should do for now - - enough for some burrowing at least)Last edited by jason holland; 06-12-07, 11:46 PM.
