  • Glasgow Andy on Waxworms

I got myself a wee tub of waxworms from the petshop the other day. I have not fed them to my T as yet but am aware that the waxworms can burrow into the substrate and 'hide' making it difficult/impossible for my T to find.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
I just wanted to vary my T's diet.

    Hi Andrew

I would try and feed them to your T in a shallow dish, with sides just high enough that the worms can't ecape but your T can get at them, similar to a water dish. That worked well for me in the past.

Not sure if it's very relevant to T's as well, but they are very calorific/fattening. I used to buy them to feed to my Chameleon and was told to feed in moderation as they are so fattening.

Just an idea to supplement rather than use as main food type.

i've got some now as a treat for a few of the little ones. if i drop them in front of the animal, they tend to go for it pretty quick. my C fasciatum in particular really likes them!

i'm still trying to get rid of the maggots i bought...so disgusting, and still so many to feed to my pets!

          hi there

i dont think you'r supposed to use waxworms as a main food source
but just as an odd treat, or they can be used
          for under weight slings etc..

my little versi wouldnt eat anything, crix, locusts or mealies
          she looked so skinny,
and i gave her waxies for a while until she started eating
and now she's on a regular diet with only the very odd
          waxie now and again.

All my T's love them when i give them, and they never have time to
burrow down the T's are straight on them. lol

i'm sure someone once told me to only give them as a treat
they way you'd give sweets to a child.

Definitely once in a while for feeding these i think. Not sure what the high protein value can do to a spider but wise to aire on the side of caution.

I agree with the other Colin, feed in a shallow dish if you can.
