  • Happy New Year to Everybody from Glasgow Andrew

    Hey fellow Spidereenoes.
Well I have got it bad, or its getting worse!
As some of you will remember I got myself a Mex Red Knee, its doin well, its molted a wee while ago and things are good. Its viv is all set up and I leave it too it.
Then I discovered another pet shop in Glasgow in The Barra's ( famous area in Glasgow, up the Gallowgate ) Its a busy shop with lots of regular customers, I started spending lots of time brousing around. It has a good few T's, pink toes, red leg, red hump. goliath, zebera!
Long story short, I could not stop my self and got myself a Chile Rose, its all set up in a viv and appears to be ok, it eats well. I got myself a varied supply of spider food, waxworms, small locusts and crickets, bug food too, my crickets appear to love fish food, the flackey stuff and punnish it as soon as I pop it in with them.
Now I seem to be edging towards a Costa Rican Zebera, can anyone give me feedback on this type, I heard it is a good one to get.
well I realise I could keep my T's in smaller accomodation but I seem to like the viv type set-up, if I get this really bad i think I will be moving out of my bed room!

      Hi Andrew
Used to have a Costarican zebra a few years back I found it quite active and prone to fang wielding on occasions if upset, but other than that a lovely spider well worth the investment

      all the best

          happy new year Andrew!

Elaine, if i don't miss my guess, the intended species is Aphonopelma seemani.

Andrew, if you want to know the scientific name of something (which makes it far easier to identify a species for sure, as the "common name" isn't anywhere near as common as you'd think), a good way i've found is to just type in what you know into google's image search and then see what comes up. check the images that look like what you expect (if you know what to expect), and look for the scientific names.
if you don't know what to expect, you should still be able to find pics and articles on it with both names referenced.

            Happy New Year,

Many of the A. seemani now in the pet trade are comming from Honduras and Guatamala, NOT Costa Rica which is closed to the export of wildlife.

            A. seemani is very wide spread which shows just how pointless and misleading these common names can be.

if it helps, what i've read about this species is that they do well with a bit of humidity but can be kept dry. Ray, you can correct me if i've got this wrong, but i believe you said that the more humid they are the more chance of them being nearly black with white stripes rather than brown with white stripes?
they like to burrow apparently, so it might be a defensive pet hole.
however, they are a beautiful species, and i am personally stoked i've got two spiderlings, even if they hide most of the time!
