  • Ideas for new T

Hey all, first post so be gentle

When I was younger (about the age of 10) I used to have a tarantula, a Mexi-red knee and had that for many years until I moved then got rid of it and with going to college and other things I never got round to having another one.

I visited my brother the other day and he has a new tarantula and this has sorta encouraged me to purchase another T. I've had the idea in my head for a while now anyway... My only problem being that I live in a rural area of Wales so would need to buy it online to have the T delivered, can anyone recommend a good website that deliver?

I wouldn't really consider myself as a beginner and my girlfriend has also had previous experience with them so can anybody recommend a nice display tarantula. I don't want one which is going to stay underground all day! I'd prefer a big tarantula as I always wanted my smithi to grow bigger :P I used to feed it quite a lot in the hopes it would magically grow overnight lol, ahhh misguided youth.

Please remember that I can only obtain what is available to me online!

THanks very much for your warm welcome and information. Can you possibly recommend any tarantulas that grow on the larger size? Hopefully one that doesn't burrow to much.

Also thanks for the recommendation of the website!

you couldn't go far wrong with a Lasiadora parahybana!
they are usually too defensive for handling, but they don't (as far as i know) burrow too much.
slings are cheap and grow fast.
i think Theraphosa blondi's and apophysis are also good for display, but even nastier.
for a relatively gentle but decent-sized spider, Grammastola pulchra is another option. nice, velvety black colouration and can in fact be quite docile at times. they don't grow as big as the giants, but a nice size, anyway.
Acanthoscurria geniculata is another big one, but again defensive. as far as i know, they don't burrow much either.

Grammostola aureostriata, normally docile, grows quite large, VERY easy to keep.

Acanthoscurria geniculata is what I'd go for if I were to do a complete restart, L. parahybana also gets a thumbs up from many people. Both grow large, neither are skittish, don't demand too much from the keeper and definitely display Ts.

I'm currently reading Marshall's book on Ts and he suggests the more you try to decorate and emulate a natural environment the more the T is likely to use a burrow and not show itself. The less we furnish our enclosures the more we'll see our Ts. However this is balanced against creating a comfortable environment for your T.

In all honesty the more I explore the more I want, colours and behaviours, terrestrial and arboreal, big and small, the list is endless.

If you email the spider shop why not ask for his advice based on what he has in stock.

                      Sorry to bother you all again but i've been searching for a few days now and i've narrowed it down the these three;

                      T. Blondi : http://www.southcoastinverts.net/pro...?prod=GoliathA

                      Acanthoscurria geniculata : http://www.thespidershop.co.uk/insec...roducts_id=188

                      Aphonopelma seemanni : http://www.exotic-pets.co.uk/stripe-knee-tarantula.html

I really did want a T.Blondi but that website is so expensive it might not happen as i'm having to pay the costs of the housing for it because I haven't got it yet! Don't worry, i'll be getting that before the T but i've got a strict budget people My budget : £120 ish.

Do you think it'd be a good idea to get this pre-built kit?

The Spider Shop has no A. geniculata. If you google 'tarantula suppliers' you'll get a whole list of them, though the Spider Shop are selling adult Grammostola formosas at the moment which are beautiful. Also check out the bulletin board on this site, there might be something there which might interest you. The T. blondi at south coast inverts is far too expensive, shop around and you'll get one much cheaper.

yeah, the reason they don't have it at the moment is because I just bought it!

I thought the t. Blondi was extortionate so I'm pleased with my choice
