  • Chomatopelma cyanopubescens MM

my C cyanopubescens just moulted into a mature male on the weekend, i think it was.
does anyone know how long mature males of this species tend to last after they've got their "equipment?"
just wondering approximately how long i have to find him a girlfriend...

James, mine has been mature for about 6 months now. He's not looking too hot anymore though. However I did mate him a couple of months ago and I think that tends to speed up their demise. Have got an egg-sac btw

          Hello!

In my experience adult males of this species lives less than many other tarantulas' adult males. 6 months is pretty nice age thus I expect it is possible the male of such age is in not very goof breeder mood.
So, find a mate for Your male asap.

Taki, how do You manage to save his poor life when mating him? How long in Your experience wasthe copulation in Your case?
          Thanks!
          All the best,

Mikhail, thanks for that...i'm hoping maybe in the next month or so to line up a female, but not optimistic now

Mary, Toran thought he had a female, but it ended up doing the same as mine...moulting into a MM! so no luck there, for either of us

                cheers Andy!
doesn't seem like many people are keeping these at the moment? very strange, they are a beautiful and easy spider! not the most docile in the world, but who cares?

yep, i asked her, but her female's still recovering from being mated. if he's still around when she's recovered, then we'll see, but it was a bit recent for her.

It was same as all my other species Mikhail, copulation was about a minute. As to how I saved his life, she never showed any agression towards him. He mated her and then walked away .
I will share my secret with you though...... She's slightly smaller than him! I wasn't sure if she would be big enough, but I guess that may be the reason for my success???
And as you say, he is looking pretty much on his last legs at 6 months.

                        Hi Taki!

I see... How long ago the copulation had happened?
In my experience smaller or bigger - female always try to eat males. But I "work" only with two females. And as far as most people reported most females are male-consumers.

Yeah I'm surprised too. I reckon it could be one of the best display Tarantulas there is.

I'm sure I would have gotten into the hobby alot sooner if somebody had just shown me a chromatopelma and what a great creature it can be (I'd never been impressed with smithy's, they always seemed slow and fat and boring to me and that is all 99% of people think of when they think of T's..)

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised I have never seen Tarantulas at a zoo before...
That would be a great way to get people familiar with them and they are exotic enough to belong there.

Hope you find a female James.

                            Totally agree Tom
In the 80s I knew a number of people with G. rosea but I was never impressed. They sat there, ignoring the crickets as if to say I'm not coming out with you lot looking at me, bog off! When I finally did seem them the most amazing thing I saw was them turning round in circles laying down web. Not the most impressive thing for a punk rock green haired zipped up lad to see. Laughable now I guess.

i'm with you about smithi's Tom...not that i have anything against them, i'm just surprised at how popular they are.
                              i prefer B emilia, personally.
but yes, still no luck with my lad...but if he can last a couple months, i'll bring him to a show if i've not had luck before, and see if one of the traders wants to do a deal.
