  • any Haplopelma experts out there?

anyone help me out with some info on Haplopelma Vonwirthi? is it a recognised species? I read through Boris post but im still a bit confused, it says something about it being a synom of minax, but the one I have a picture of that I have been offered doesnt look anything like a minax.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

World spider catalogue doesn't list this as a species

    AMNH has this info....

mf vonwirthi Schmidt, 2005....................Southeast Asia [urn:lsid:amnh.org:spidersp:039500]
    H. v. Schmidt, 2005a: 5, f. 1-3 (f, nomen nudum, no type depository; probably misidentified H. minax per von Wirth & Striffler, 2005).
    H. v. Schmidt, 2005g: 24, f. 1-3 (Df).
    H. v. Peters, 2005b: 72, f. 235-241 (f, f. m).
    H. volkervonwirthi Schmidt, 2006a: 7, f. 1-3 (Dm, superfluous replacement name).
    H. volkervonwirthi Schmidt, 2006c: 9, f. 1 (f).

listed firstly Nomen Nudum (Naked Name) basically means a name which looks like a scientific name, and was proposed to become a scientific name has failed because it wasn't published with an adequate description.
I think if there's a valid description of the species later, then the name becomes valid from the Nomen Nudum date.
It's been given a superfluous name untill this happens.

Thats how it reads to me anyway

I am no expert on Haplos, but whilst finding out about my Longpipes, it was mentioned that H vonwirthi is H sp 'vietnam'. I have the thread still but the photo you need has been deleated - this was an explanation for the T in question.

As it has not a leg IV that are longer than leg I and lack enlarged scopula pad on met. IV it cannot be H. longipes nor H. lividum.
As it lacks prominent leg striping it cannot be H. albostriatum,
and as it is not jet black with reduced chevrons on abdomen it cannot be the typical form of H. minax. As it however is gunship grey, has mottled chevrons on abdomen and orangeish spinnerets it is identical to what is known in the hobby as H. sp. "Vietnam" (which is also very commonly imported).

Have a filter through this article -

You need to read to the bottom nearly, the second lot of Haplo photos. It says it is a member of the minax group ( like my Longpipes ). The article lists the members of each different group of Haplopelma.

eh? are you looking at a different WSC?

Like it says in the piece you quoted from it is a valid species. It was redescribed and the types were deposited.

            look:-
            H. volkervonwirthi Schmidt, 2006a: 7, f. 1-3 (Dm, superfluous replacement name).
            H. volkervonwirthi Schmidt, 2006c: 9, f. 1 (f).

Besides if it wasn't valid at this time then it wouldn't be listed except if it was found to be a smyonmamathingi.
            hope this helps.

Thats my point Chris.... SpidCat only goes to schmidti (should have put a question mark after the first sentence really)

              http://www.catalogueoflife.org/annua...whole_words=on

Yet the museum of NH lists as per my quote.

Would the superfluous name be classed as the synonawhatsit ( like your word use) then?

                Hi Colin

Never even seen that site. I always go by this one:-

As far as I know this is nomally the excepted species listing world wide? It is also updated quite often (every 6 months or so).

I personly don't see the point in other ones as all they would do is muddy the waters more, unless they had the exact same information on them.
                all the best
                Chris

Thats normally my first choice (and where i quoted from), the "catalogue of life" SpidCat links to AMNH version 8.5, i never noticed any difference until today, you'd have thought it would be updated as per AMNH though.

at least we're on the same page

                  Cheers Matey

p.s. still got that beer token with your name on it, it'll still be valid in 2009

That catalogue of life looks to be well out of date. Just looking on the Psalmopoeus genus it only list 11 species. Shame really but as long as the WSC is there it's not a big problem I don't think.

                    Look forward to 2009

                    All the best
                    Chris
