  • Crickets

I bought some crickets about 2 weeks ago, they were in a container about 30 in total.I feed them on a slice of apple covered in Nutrobal,As my Tarantula only needs a few crickets at a time. And you have to buy the crickets in a container not just a few.I would like to know if the ones that are still ok can still be fed to my Tarantula, and how long can i keep the crickets before i buy new ones.As i think it,s pointless buying a container full only to have to chuck them away.Any comments on keeping crickets most welcome cheers Stephen.

    Hi Stephen.

    Firstly welcome....

The answer is quite simple, if you feed the crickets on a suitable diet (greens, veg etc), keep them watered and keep them in a clean environment, then as long as the crickets alive and well it's suitable food for a tarantula.

And there's a great reasoning for getting more tarantula, muhahahaha!

I have three containers all with crickets in at different stages. I buy pinheads for my tiny red knee sling and I get loads and loads of them in one container when I buy them. Obviously its way too many for my little sling but I feed them well and then when they are big enough they go into the next container for the medium sized crickets and as they grow from there they go into another container for the bigger ones and those are the ones my chile will eat and my red rump and gbb. For £2 every couple of months I can then feed all my spids.

yeah like said, feed em well, then as long as they are alive they will be fine.

In fact most people tend to feed their crickets a better diet than their breeders who do not care about the nutritional value of their cricket.

The main staple food should be weetabix, oats and dogfood (not cheap dogfood that contains colouring! Iams is best to use).
Chicken feed is supposed to be good to use also.

And additionally, once a week or so provide fresh carrot/potato and some greenery like lettuce spinach or dandelion.
Apple is more of a luxury food item but they don't seem to like it exlusively and will probably start cannibalising each other if that is all that is provided.

lee at thespidershop.co.uk sells a cricket keeper container which would come with instructions on the best way of keeping them. i have a large tub that i used to use when i used to use crickets. sawdust and a few kitchen roll middles is all that was in there and i used to feed em goldfish flakes. i also had a tub with wet coconut bark in there so they could lay their eggs in it. hey preston a never ending supply of crickets

              What they all said !!!

I used to keep my crix in different sized tubs depending on their size, I use porridge oats as substrate cos it smells nice and the crix eat it
I also feed them cheap fish flake food, pond lellets and ground dried cat/dog food and they have a jar lid of fresh water every day.
I now almost exclusively use cockroaches because they dont smell, are silent and i have no escapee's
