  • Whoa... wth??

    Hey People
Okay I know B Smithis are oppurtunist burrowers, but I've just found something very interesting going on in IC's home.
Remember I said he/she sat ON TOP of his/her flower pot? I remeber Peter Roach said it was probably due to the substrate being 100% vermicuilte, so yesterday I changed it to a mixture of compost (a mixture of peat moss and other natural materials) and vermiculite, I'd say around 70 compost:30 vermiculite.
Anyway IC still sat on top of the flower pot, and I just opened the container up to see he/she has dug what seems to be a little ditch, where he/she usually rests, and it reveals the back of the flower pot.
I know it not unusual behaviour, but should I be worried that he'she seems to be making his/her hide there?
    Thanks,
    Rich.

Rich, just let it make it's home where it wants to love, if it's wrong it will move to another location. Spiddy knows what it wants love.

Okay Mary thank you; but, what if it was to stay there for a long time and decided to moult there, would that not potentially damage it if I open the top to peek in, only to discover I've disturbed a moulting tarntula?

Rich, leave the digging to the tarantula. What you cannot see will probably be a big chamber. My tarantula started digging yesterday about 13:30. Now it has a massive cavern that looks like this

It has loads of room and hopefully will moult in there. If that's what makes it comfortable, then thats the way it should be.

Now IC's got a substrate he can do something with i'd be prepared to see a lot more digging, he's now displaying his natural instinct and if he could talk he'd probably thank you.

Mary's right mate, Leave him to get on with it, he'll be ok

Rich I told you he has chosen the darkest and shallowest place to hide, he can't have the intelligence to know that the ceiling he has chosen is infact a lid...

He will moult while you are fast asleep anyway so I really doubt you will ever disturb him moulting.

So nothing much to worry about

Good thing you gave him something he can dig in.

Lol why would he necesarily do it at night and not during the day, that area is a very dark place, I doubt he'd notice much difference once the room is pitch black.
I know he doesn't have the intel. to realize that the 'ceiling' is in fact a lid, but the number of times I check up on him must surely scare the little IC... I mean, it would probably have scared him so many times that he wouldn't do it again; and maybe that is what the ditch is for.
For some reason, you mentioned something about your GBB but it only appears in my email, so I'll just respond to it, calling him a little psycho lol, but yeah, that is similar to IC's situation...

Rich, leave it alone for a few days, stop disturbing it, stop opening the lid and checking on it. How can it make itself feel comfortable when you're persistently disturbing it.
Remember your first day at senior school? did you go wondering around without a care in the world or did you gradually find your feet in your new environment, getting more comfortable with your surroundings and gradually finding new areas to investigate.

Actually... it was more in-between, but that's another story lol.
Yeah I get what you are saying, and I knew this already but I still can't help it man.
Well, I've got to do what I've got to do, so I'll leave it be, I'll leave it be.
                    Thanks Peter.

This is the best piece of advice for you .............. EVER.

I can see your spider DYING through stress in the not so distant future due to your over fussing, meddling and general messing about with it.

I'm sorry Richard for being so forthright but you are constantly asking extremely basic questions ANY of which could be answered by a basic Google search.
Your constant 'peeking'.. read STRESSING is not doing your spider any good.
A spider in a hole out of sight is a happy spider.
Spiders thrive on neglect, which basically means feed it occasionally, changer the water and moisten the substrate where and when needed and that is IT.
