        Hi

Chris, while you make some valid points there, it doesn't answer my question: what is the point of pinning bugs?
Each to their own I say. They may ask the same about yourself `Whats the point in keeping live ones?´. With any kind of hobby you don't have or that doesn't interest you you can ask what is the point of it.
But ok I will think of some things that may give reasons to why they would do this:-
        1. They collect them just like a stamp collector collects stamps.
        2. Space saving. You don't need many tanks, boxes etc etc to keep them in.
        3. avoid dissapointment early.........If its already dead you wont cry because it died.
        4. Display....that might look nice on the wall.
        5. Study this should speak for its self really.
        6. Getting the live ones is a lot harder.
        7. Although I can think of many more, I am boring myself silly so will stop here as there is more I have to address in this post.

        if you see my point
Sure I see your point but I also see theirs.
The rest I think I addressed above or?

Nowadays the roots of the entomological shows are still there (i.e pinned / display) but the recently the "new" aspect of the hobby (i.e. keeping as pets / breeding) has become foremost.
I don't know about that to be honest. I still reckon there are a hell of alot more people into the pining side of the hobby than the keeping as pets sort of thing. Sure the breeding and raiseing up side is growing, but once they are all grown up....well lets just say I had fun trying to shoot the moths with my blow pipe! Like I think you also said alot of the reason for the live stuff is so it gives the pinner a choice as to what stage they want to pin it.

        nobody is complaining
except about the dead insects that were there to buy.

I had only heard of the show via this forum and was therefore not aware it was an entymology show and not just tarantulas until I got there - hence my "surprise" about the pinning
I find it a little hard to believe but hey, not going say its not true.

Whilst it's always fun to be called "stupid" by a complete stranger on a public forum,
Is it? where did this happen? I can only remember saying that the comment was rather stupid not the person who said it. A very big difference. Saying that something said is stupid ,doesn't mean the person saying it is stupid.

I would like to point out that entymology is not the study of dead pinned butterflies and encompasses rather more than that.
Your quite right it is the study of insects. Some like to studdy them live and yet a lot study them dead. I wouldn't mind betting there are a good few people who just keep dead tarantulas in jars of alcohol just to study their anatomy or dull stuff like the taxonomical things. There are wide aspects in almost every hobby, but if the thought of a pinned insect never crosses your mind when the word entymology is read or spoken then I can only think it is because of naivety.

It is a shame that Chris clearly had a stressful day yesterday and felt the need to be unpleasant - I hope you have a better day today mate.
unpleasent? Oh please. Just because I thought and said that a coment you made was rather stupid. (and still do). BTW I had a really fun day yesterday and today wasn't thatr bad either. I could almost say that hardly any day is a bad day after all I lived though it.

I will be a bit more careful about expressing an opinion on this forum in future, I hadnt realised it would unleash invective like that.
You call that a violent attack!!!!!!!!! Don't be so rediculous. Maybe I should just agree with nodding head and gormless smile at what every person posts because, obviously to disagree is sacrilege to a forum!

At least I gave you a reason for why I thought the comment to be stupid. I could have just said that was stupid and just left it at that. Then I think you would have every right to be a little p****d at me.

i wouldn't take Chris' posting style personally, Claudia...
Ah a voice of reason at long last. Endlich! do you mean to say at long last there is someone I can dissagree with without them throwing a wobber!

Chris posts very straight forward, succinct and to the point remarks that those who are not used to them, will question.
Don't think my posts can be that straight forward as it seems people can read a whole lot more into them than I ever thought it possible!

I'm sure Chris and other "oldies" in the hobby like me remember the days of the completely "dead" entomological shows, and some times we just assume that others will be aware of the same (sometimes not quite a good thing)
Careful Colin your almost on the verge of saying that dreaded and somewhat silly saying `old guard´, that conjures up images of a seceret order of spider keepers in white robes, masks and other costumes.....oh hang on wait a minute..........Hale Fest!!!!!!!!
I have only kept the things since I think 95 or 96 I forget which so can't really remeber these shows at all.

Anyways sorry for my reply and views. I will try from now on to stick to nice pic replys.

        All the best
        Chris

Oh glad you all enjoyed yourselfs! I was stuck at home doing really stupid stuff but it was fun anyway!

I will cherish those Huggs as, as usual I'm in the dog house so they will be the only Huggs I get for a while.

Awwwww Chris!! *double hugs* I guess sometimes differences of valid opinion aren't always appreciated, but it doesn't make your opinions any less worthwhile.

Society generally seems to be more sensitive and willing to take offense these days...I know you don't mean any upset to anyone, you're just very open with your views, you speak your mind, wear your heart on your sleeve or whatever phrase fits best...but that's better than being a chameleon...healthy, educated debate never hurt anyone.

Now I must post some photos...I gotta see some of those *nice pics* comments... hehehe Just teasing!

thanks for that reply, Chris! yep, to each their own, we can agree on that
and it is good that we don't all "agree", even if some of us (me too sometimes, i admit!) get wound up over it! haha

love that reference to the Old Guard with robes and spiders and candlelit ceremonies

Lou...thanks! hope Ch'attur'gah (my BRB) doesn't get jealous!

sorry Yvonne! i almost missed it too, but it was at Dan Parker's table. he also had blondi's for the same price (£45!!!)!
and Lou twisted my arm, quite literally! not hard or painfully, but enough!
however, if this apo turns out male, when it matures, it's going straight to Mary (and hopefully others) for breeding...with a little luck, we'll have a good number of slings to go round
i did see a lividum or two at the show, but doubtless they'll be loads at the BTS.
