  • 4 week update

It's now been exactly a month since my G. rosea RCF pair were successfully mated. I really hope she is gravid, because the male has shown absolutely zero interest in any more efforts. No sign of a spermweb since I've had him, and I have been checking very carefully. My MM Chaco leaves very obvious signs of spermwebs even if he tears them down, but the rosie has done nothing. He's also ignored all food.

The Baron (my female) has been happily munching on about 3 crickets a week (except the first week after mating when she refused food), which is more than I normally feed my Ts but I thought if she is making babies she would appreciate a bit of extra food. I gave her a heatmat last week and she has been loving it, cuddling up to it at the side most of the time. I mainly did this because of advice about how cooling them down can make them lay an eggsac. I couldn't think of a way to cool her down when the time comes, so instead I thought I would warm her up now and then take the heatmat away as a substitute for cooling. Don't know if it will work tho.

Anyway this is her today. She is definitely getting tubby but I don't know if that's pregnancy or just the food! I guess I'll know better in another few weeks.

    Hi Kate,
lovely tarantula. I'd be tempted to up the crickets to 5-6 a week until she is big, then lower the temp only by a degree or so from her normal range. See then what happens!
    best wishes

Thanks for the advice Nicola, I wasn't really sure how much more I should feed her. I'm sure she won't complain about me doubling her rations, she is absolutely wolfing food down at the moment

        Hi Kate,
        tarantulas
, unlike scorpions for example, will not overfeed. They'll just fatten themselves up and then stop when they are full. I'm not advocating this practice in general, I'm suggesting purely on the grounds of giving her nutrients for her babies. Also if you put the male back in and he has another go, if she has all the food she needs then she won't look for more by eating him! Good luck Kate

          hey Kate,
I was going to start cooling my female down now after having given 6-8 weeks of warm temps but I can't find a cool enough place!!

I have completely turned off all my heatmats, its not going below 23 degrees at night.

Yesterday my room went up to 30 degrees. Had to have my fan running for 3 hours and even then it had only gone down to 29.5

Today is going to be another hot hot day.
