hiya, my b.albiceps has displayed some strange behaviour the last couple of weeks. she has totally re arranged her tank and pushed the substrate all the way up one end of the tank. i was informaed that this behaviour indicates that she is getting ready to lay an egg sack, i only bought her in feb and she was wild caught so it is possible that she is pregnant. the only thing that concerns me is that where she has pushed her substrate along, the half of the tank where she sits is very shallow and there is only barely quarter inch of substrate. should i top up the substrate to make it deeper or leave it as it is?

id prob just leave it... prob best not to disturb her at the mo. if she reaches the bottom, maybe put a little in, but its prob best just to leave her for now (in my opinion)

She'll know what she's doing. Don't disturb her at all.

Yeh, I would just leave her be.
She will move it back if she wants to.

This seems to be quite popular Brachypelma behaviour. My red knee does it now and again, and my mate has a rosea that constantly moves stuff around.

I wouldnt worry greatly, im sure even spiders 'fancy a change' now and again.

Just as a matter of interest Matt, do you have a heat mat under the tank? (if you use one)
She may just be trying to get to a warmer area.

And if i am on the right track......heat mats are best secured to the sides or back of vivs as spiders usually burrow to escape heat.
              If i'm off track...ignore me

her heat mat is on the back, but she has pushed her substrate up and stays by her hide on the lower part

Right, thats sorted, no explanation there then, we can ignore that scenario.
                  Back to guessing again

Had to ask the question even though i know you're a "switched on" sort of guy and have a grasp of the hobby in general, sorry...

I've had them do that randomly and for egg sacks. It is the right time of year for Brachys to do egg sacks.
I would say you should try and buy CB Brachypelma, they are protected by CITES and any brought in are illegally collected unless they have a special permit.
