  • Water disappearing

I'm having some strange occurence in my new tank where the water I put into the dish is disappearing within half an hour of putting it there.
I have regular coco fibre for almost all of the substrate, with a top layer of moss.
My only thought is that somehow the moss is literally sucking all the moisture it can from the air around it.

The temperature in the tank is about 78 to 80 degrees farenheit. There is no condensation at all on the glass.
The substrate around the tank looks fairly dry, and our B.Smithi walks on it so I know it must be (she hates wet or damp ground).
I also know it isnt her that is drinking it as I've sat and watched her for the last hour or so on and off and she hasnt moved at all from her position.

So what's making the water disappear? My only conclusion is that it must be the moss as I cant find any other explanation, but I dont know how it's doing it.

She ate fairly recently, so I'm guessing she got her last lot of moisture from that. But I dont want this to go on long in case she needs water and there isnt any.

Moss can act as a wick to suck the water out if even a single strand is touching the water. I would suggest taking the water bowl out and giving it a quick wipe over before refilling it and see if it happens again.

I had this happen to me as well.
I found out it was either the substrate was getting into the dish or a piece of moss was touching the water.
As Peter said, I would give the dish a quick clean and make sure nothing is getting into it.

I'd noticed this too. I don't have any moss in my setup just coir. It easily explained when my smithi piles a load of it by the dish and it spills over. I don't keep the dish near the heat mat either. I just put it down to one of those things I cannot explain. It seems to have rectified itself as it hasn't done it for a while. However, Gloria still likes to dump coir by the water dish!
