  • Aphonopelma sp. new river

Hey everyone, as you can tell I am new here. I wish I would have known about this years convention sooner, as we are not having one here in the States this year. I will for sure attend the next event, I've always wanted to visit the UK, plus every British person I have met has been highly impressed with my ability to distinguish different British dialects

Enough about me, let's talk about this species. I heard it one best in show or something? I'd like to see photos of the specimen that did. I'm expecting 5 mature females and 3 juveniles in this week and will be sure to post plenty of pictures.

Is this species available at all across the pond? I know there's tons of stuff you guys have that we do no, and I wonder if it went the other way as well. The legal aspect of the flow of invertebrates has always intrigued me, as I am a lawyer in training. For instance, if this species isn't common over there, how was the specimen that won brought in to the UK?

I like this forum and the full name policy tremendously, I purchased my international membership last night so I've got a lot of material to read through

    Best regards - Ryan

welcome to the forum ryan. i am sure if you have a good look through the gallery you will find pics of this species on the exhibition gallery. as far as i am aware someone took a large order of this species and was/is/has going to collect them from the wild and bring them back to this country, but do not hold me to that as i am not 100% sure. as far as the law goes in this country, the only thing that restricts what we can keep is if its on the dangerous animals list, in which case we would have to obtain a licence. if we buy from some other countries to bring back into the uk, we might have the C.I.T.E.S list to deal with but other then that, we can collect away lol. i hope someone will be able to help you further with you are looking for, once again welcome

      Hi Ryan
Welcome to the BTS forum and to the Society, I will add you to the BTS members groups and this will give you further access to sections reserved for members.

As for the New River sp. The owner would be the best person to contact in regards to how this was brought over, however I presume this would have been a legal process judging by the said owners stance on wild caught tarantulas and illegal smuggling.

There seem to be on a lot of US dealers trade lists as far as I can tell by who are selling this sp. by doing a quick search on google.

As for shipments to the UK, as stated above only CITES species are a restricted to import but they still can be brought in if captive bred with proof of such.

Providing your shipment has proper export and collection permits (if needed), import permits are a formality.

certain country's are of course closed for export and therefore would not be allowed.

Gone in the UK are the days of large qty's of wild caught imports and the name of the game are small batches and then these are generally captive bred and distributed. These tend to be expensive at first but within a few years when everyone else breeds them the price drops and they become common place sp. Then these become common inexpensive sp. not worth importing..

      Regards
      Mark

Please note:The BTS does not advocate or support such large qty imports and supports captive breeding and conservation of species in the wild and there habitats, we believe that captive breeding and proper management of wild imports is the key to the survival of all Theraphosids.

            welcome Ryan!
it's a lovely species, i was pleased to see it win.
we do get drips and drabs of these great Aphonopelma's you have so many of over there, and yeah it looks like some sp New River is coming.
the owner in question actually got my slow addiction to Aphonopelma's started with his great collection!

amazing to tell the dialects apart...i'm still learning and i've been here 5.5 years!

I actually also acquired 3 unsexed juveniles (supposedly CB) as well and posted them in the classifieds, I've shipped over seas before so I know how the customs work. Never to the UK though. I'm selling them cheap as I like to see the hobby spread rather than a few people horde things up

I hate to reply twice in a row to my own thread, especially about something sort of off topic, but I paid for international membership and I think the:

Under the names is excellent . How do I go about receiving mine?

Welcome to the BTS forum Ryan
Quite a few of us got the chance to see this lovely specimen and as it was on display during the BTS expo I'm sure many will admit to getting a peek.
Unfortunately the discussion on removing so many of these Ts from the wild created a rather lively thread, and led to some disillusionment by the owner. You might want to read it yourself as it should give clues as to their origin and how it was obtained.

Good to hear, if it be true, that hobbyists are trying to breed this lovely species.
