  • Tarantula dance

Hi, joined today, second thread, great society!

I have a Chile Rose and a juvenile cobalt.
My rose, after catching its dinner usualy does a little circular web spinning type of dance. Most curious.
The only reason I can think for her doing this is to mark the successful hunting ground in the wild. (She is a wild caught).
I have seen several other Ts doing this on utube etc.
Can anyone confirm or clarify the true reason?

    Cheers.

ps, does anyone else struggle to attach pics?

        Don't miss read

Hi, I appreciate the response but there is no wrapping up going on. She catches the prey, holds it in her mouth, does the "dance" then consumes the meal. She's never saved anything for later, (greedy little thing).LOL.

Still struggling with the pics aswell (Error 500 - Internal server error)

its not actually "wraping up" liks your normal garden spider would etc. it just coats it in web. so wrapping it up should be taken lightly.

            Yeah ours do it too.

just go around in a circle whilst munching their dinner.

I thought it was something they do to feel secure, putting a circle of silk around them as security in case something comes up on them whilst they're distracted by their meal.

Dont know for certain but would love to know why they do it. But that was my educated (or uneducated ) guess!

                Alex

This is normal behaviour in tarantulas, they are spinning a table cloth. They go round and round creating a silk mat to catch any of the prey's bits that may fall off. Also if they have multiple items they may drop these on the mat and then silk over them and pick the gathered ball back up.

They don't always use the mat but its just instinct to spin it.

As for the error 500 this is due to the image size your trying to upload. It must be only 600 x 400 pixels or you get an error.

I have set it to this size for bandwidth reasons. Currently we are chewing up 300mb a day, mighty close to our limit..

                Cheers

                    Thanks for all the comments!!
I'm not computer literate enough to alter image sizes yet so I gues my pics will have to wait. (I only learnt how to get them from camera to laptop last week, I learnt text massaging on a mobile the week before, I thought I was on a roll. Oh well. LOL!!)

Hi Alexander, here's a wee tutorial I wrote up elsewhere on the forum for somebody else for resizing pictures.
                        -----------------------------------
Do you have photoshop? If so, open your image in it, click the image menu at the top, click image size in the drop down menu then at the top of the window that'll open you'll have pixel dimensions which'll probably be somewhere in the 1,000's. Change the height to 400 and it'll automatically scale the width down. If the width is still higher than 600 then you can just lower it to 600 and again it'll scale the height down appropriately.

If you don't have Photoshop you can use microsoft paint. Right click your image, hover over 'open with' and click paint. Once your image open click image, then stretch/skew from the drop down menu. Change the horizontal and vertical stretch values to around 50% and your image should shrink. You can check the dimensions by clicking image then attributes from the drop down menu and just keep repeating the process till you get something 600x400 or less.
                        -----------------------------------

                        Hope that helps.

You'll have to stop by and take a look at the forum. If you think the members and participants on the BTS are devoted and keen, that's nothing compared to some of those guys. Plus they think I'm weird for having a tarantula and could do with some back up
