  • male versicolor options

hi all, about a year and a half ago i decided to get myself a versicolor and decided to raise one from a spiderling, its the first time ive done so and in its last moult ive noticed that its developed palpal bulbs. now i love t's i own three a avi avi mexican red knee and a salmon pink birdeater which are all females. i got females because for the obvious reason they live longer. im stuck on what to do. im not a beeder so it does not interst me in breeding him. im realy stuck on what i want to do im just asking you guys for some options. if i keep him he his not going fufull his duty, which i dont think is right just keeping him and letting him die. im also in two minds on giving him to a breeder. i dont know any, i would not know what to do so any help or contacts on that would be cool. the thing thats threw me for so long is the size of him. he is a big guy for a male. i really thought he was a she untill last month. there you go anyway cheers guys look forward to replys and options

You don't have to give him to a breeder, you could just loan him out for breeding and get some slings back in return for his services. There is parts on this forum you can advertise him for breeding loan.

Bear in mind that loaning a male out is not a 100% guarantee of spiderlings in return. However if it were my spider, than that's what I'd do. Personally I'd rather the male had a chance of mating whatever the outcome.

thanks micheal for your reply mate. im not interested in getting anymore t's. not a 50 50 split i just dont have the time to be bringing up then selling the t's on. do alot of breeders do swaps say my male versi for a female? il be real upset giving him away but i would be just as up set him stuck around and just flopping it without doing what he needs to do. also any good tarantula shops that could do this would be good also i just dont know where to beging really

Well you could maybe get a juvenile female in return I would say, if he was needed and they were willing to swap. Like Phil said if you loan him out, even though you don't want any slings, it's not always guaranteed. And it can be touch and go aswell wether he will be the females next meal, I know that from experience unfortunately. Maybe try Lee at the spider shop.co.uk, he might offer you a swap for something, it's worth a try.

yeah thanks micheal i will do tommorow morning il have a think about it but i just think its a shame. he is a good size for a male, in the versi do you know if the show their hooks at all cause i cant see them. i can see the bulbs quite clearly when i put him on a wine glass the other night. also if an exchange is possible what protection do i have on me recieving the other parties tarantula and me not loosing mine. just a bit new to it all did not think i would ever have to go down this route really

Well I have a bought a good few slings and juvie's of Lee and his tarantula's are top notch. I get them in the post from mainland Britain to here in Belfast, and they are always spot on when they arrive, so there's no worries there. There's not so much an insurance to speak of, just a guarantee that they were in excellent health when posted, so they should be fine. Aslong as your fella was in great nick, and packed correctly, there would be no problems, also I read that male A. versicolor have reduced tibial hooks. They look more like tufts of stiff bristles, than your typical hook.

I think it would be doubtful that anyone would swap a male for a female unless they had far more females than males or desperately needed one. Males don't last as long as females and there's no guarantee that the male has only just matured.
I'd suggest selling him off or going for the 50/50 in which case you know he'd be doing "his thing", you'd get some slings and you'd get your T back - assuming it all goes well.
I've been following a thread on tarantulaus where a lady has an avic that's lasted nearly 2 years after its final moult.

I'm currently waiting for a moult from my versicolor, fingers crossed for a female. But if you decide to go for the 50/50 I'd get a post in T-store, AP and here advertising your available male.

I have to agree with the general sencus of the above posts.

Loan him out and give him the chance to breed, lots of people have these on their wish lists and you wouldn't have any problems getting them sold on if it ends in success.

the 50/50 is a pointless to me i dont want any more t's and the bother of selling them on. i dont know really i might keep him. hes well looked after and what have you. il have a think about it if anyone here wants to do a swap for a male versi for a female versi then i think il be quite willing to do so then both of us are happy. i dont want to be loaning him out and getting more spiderlings that i dont want and having to sell them off. i ant got the time. s when ive time il post a pic up he threw me with the size hes quite big for a male. anyway thanks for the help any more options though wuld be pretty cool.

You could always loan him out and let the other person keep all the potential slings if you don't want any. I think it's important that he gets the chance to become a daddy especially since its such a desired species.
