  • Anyone willing to make a visit to Hitchin??

I am the librarian of Hitchin Boys' School and I am finalising the events for our Book Week which will be the last week in November.

I am trying something a little different this year and have added lunchtime exhibits to the schedule of events. The library will be opened each lunch period for boys to visit a special display. One day will be some items on loan from the local musuem, another day will be objects that show a book in the different stages of development through publishing. The event is completely informal, so no rehearsed presentation is needed, just the display, a knowledgeable expert on hand and a consistently rotating audience of interested boys. Boys will have to acquire a ticket before the event, so that helps us limit the number of attendees in total as well as how many boys are present at any one time. I will also make sure there are anywhere from two to four extra adults in the library to help keep an eye on behaviour.

Is there anyone or maybe even a few of you out there who might be able to swing one day off work to bring around 3 to 7 tarantulas for such an event?? It would have to be on a volunteer basis, but I would reimburse you for some petrol, provide some food and there would be a small but sincere thank you gift as well ("not forged book tokens like last time" Fran, Black Books).

I originally thought about having this as part of a collector's session where four to six volunteers will bring in some of their treasures and be available to answer boys' questions on those items or anything about the hobby itself - but I am now thinking this should be a day by itself and lift the idea of keeping T's as much more than "just a hobby".

I feel a bit apprehensive about asking this, because I know I wouldn't feel very comfortable dragging my little LilyRose someplace, but I know there are folks like you (yes, you) who have done this kind of thing before. So if you are interested or have any questions, PLEASE let me hear from you - feel free to either respond here on the forum itself or use the PM/e-mail feature to contact me.

    Many, many thanks in advance!!

So how do you know your tarantula is British?

I'd be willing to donate some time.....

I have a fairly regular routine through the week normally so, if possible, can you pin it down to a date and what time is start/finish

Thanks for such a quick reply and WOW - I just saw the photo of your "wall-o-spiders" in a previous thread so yes, I suppose you could bring down a few, huh?

If you don't mind the travel from your locale and since you're the first to respond, why don't you see what things are like that week and choose from either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday the 24th, 25th 26th of November and that will become our T-Day. Lunch period is 12.30 - 1.30 so you would need to determine your travel time and any needed setup.

I'll pm or email you a little later to discuss particulars like travel costs, food choices, etc.

If anyone wishes to show off a few of their darlings I'm sure we could arrange it - it would be nice to have a couple of different folk the boys can talk to and would make for a very interesting display.

      Again, thanks!!!
