  • What are these?

    Had a close look at a couple of my tarantulas chelicerae, and they have tiny black triangles on them.
    I haven't had a look on all of my spiders, but I know my S.philippinus, N.chromatus, C.fimbriatus and L.parahybana have them.

    Got a pic (drawn sorry, bad quality too cos it was taken on my phone!)

    They are chelriceral "teeth". Used as a taxonomic tool for identifying spiders.

    Ands its not a bad drawing to be honest.

      They are cheliceral 'peg' teeth. I believe they are used for grip when biting prey

        Pretty interesting stuff, are they made out of the same stuff as fangs? What are fangs made of? Keratin?

          Have a look at Raven's paper describing Coremiocnemis tropix here. On the 6th page, marked P20. in the paper, there are some excellent photos of these

            Thanks Phil, lovely looking spider! How come the spider in the first pic is brown and then in the other pics it's very orange?
