Hello i know that tarantulas shouid not be exposed to sunlight or any bright light but i was wondering if they shouid have a tiny bit of dim light during daylight hours so they have some idea of day and night rather than be constantly in the dark i wouid imagine it wouid push them all in there burrows. Anyway the reason i ask is im going to make a big cabinet for them before i start i want to know wether to build it solid wood or have a clear plastic or glass front to let some light in. Also ive heard that some woods have pesticides in them does any one know wether ply will be ok. Thanks

Hi
It's the same with all animals they need a light pattern to be able to tell the diffrence between night and day and to behave naturaly only certain cave spiders have total darkness so keeping a spider in permant darkness cannot be healthy so when you build your cabinet keep this in mind and as the light goes down enjoy watching your spiders come to the entrance of their burrows and wait for passing prey as if they were still in their natural surroundings

There is nothing wrong with light if the T has somewhere to hide from it. As stated above they need as with all animals need to regulate thier body clock as we do.
Us humans can suffer from SAD - seasonly affective disorder or something, I would sugest its the same for T's... This is a biochemical inbalance in the hypothalamus due to the shortning of daylight hours. Where as tarantulas dont need sunlight like us humans, the need some idea of night and day.
Animals react to the change of sesons as we do. So allowing light and dark can only be benificial.

Mark
