Unfortunately I don't think your allowed to prekill your own vertebrates for tarantula consumption in the UK?. As your from Poland I do not know if your laws allow this but im sure no one from the uk can help really?.

There is nothing in Polish law about prekilling vertebrates. I thinks that this is advisable to kill mouse before consumption. Then mouse not suffer.

To be honest mate I have witnessed live vert prey fed to tarantulas in the past and its over for the prey in a matter of seconds so really speaking I would feed live if laws permitted as I cannot see a humane way of pre-killing a mouse from a human point of view. Other than that you can feed inverts to your tarantulas this is a healthy staple diet but again we could argue that in the wild the tarantula you would like to feed the mouse would take mice lizards frogs well basically anything it can over power.

Most poeple use CO2, or breaking backbone. OK, so what method use people who must freeze mouse for snakes?
Live mouse can hurt spider i think. Can break chelicera, or sth.

            Hi Zibi,

A sugested "humane" way to kill a rodent is to pick it up by the tail and swing the back of its head against a hard surface such as a table top, breaking the neck.

most spiders will feed on defrosted mice anyway so freshley killed is not esential.

And before this turns into a RAY the BUTCHER from Swindon thread, Zibi asked a question, so entitled to a sensible answer.

You may not agree with this method i dont personally, but it is humane and quick.

            Ray

It is usually recommended that before using the above mentioned neck breaking method animals are first anaesthetised or killed with an lethal inhalation of substances such as CO2 or better still N2 or Helium or even better chloroform etc. Then following the subsequent bang on the edge of the desk, severing the spinal column with a scapel should leave no doubts!

Here's the Home Office Guidelines for humane killing, makes interesting light reading:

I've heard it mentioned a few times that it is illegal to kill mice for feeding in the uk but i'm not sure where this comes from (does anyone know the exact answer, bit embarrassing really as i have passed an animal welfare qualification). As mice are considered as vermin and are not a protected species i'm not sure what the legal perspective is. I'll ask around at work and see what people say.

As far as i know...anything larger than an adult locust is illegal to feed to any pet alive!! I think this was an act of 1999 or something like that...

maybe considering a cat wouldnt be so bad after all :P

[quote="Parsnip"]...lethal inhalation of substances such as CO2 or better still N2 or Helium or even better chloroform etc...

Ummm, not sure if I would use Chloroform - It will get into the mouse's bloodstream, and thus into your spider!

                        Just a thought!

                          Killing Mice

As the afore mentioned link says
Killing by dislocation of the neck is exceptable especially for early age mice (Pinkies, small fuzzies)
Having seen this method carried out it seems humane aslong as carried out by people who have knowledge of doing so.
Saying that i think unless you have the training (and the nerve and its not an easy thing to do, because trust me that second swing is about 10 times as hurtful as the first) i surgest that you stick to frozen mice defosted or invert prey.

On a lighter note ( maybe? ) Feeding Live Verts is a topic that comes up alot when feeding snakes and other reptiles especially when the animal in question is wild caught and will only feed on live prey. Which is more humane to feed live prey animals or starve the animal, both of which are inhumane and illegal in the UK. (ill leave that up to the lawyers to sort out!)

Back on subject tho, with t's that will except inverts readily why not stick to them with the odd frozen chick or mouse thrown into the mix!

Sorry to be so morbid but hopefully it will prevent unnecessary suffering!

Yes good point although the dose required to knock out a mouse is very small and chloroform is a very volatile compound which would leave the body of a mouse so quickly so would probably not be of any risk to a spider feeding on it, but as nobody has really investigated this for certain its probably best to avoid like you say.
Going back to N2 and Helium methods, these are not only humane but is also said to be the best way of commiting suicide as word on the street is it is a wholly pleasant experience (I guess I won't be sued if I'm wrong on this?!)
