  • Translation offer

Having finally got this new machine fully up and running, over the last week I went rooting through old disc boxes and came across a lump of software that can translate entire documents. (html, txt, rtf, pdf, and a few others)

Figured that as a few folk on here ask about some articles from germany or other countries id offer a free translation service for them. The translations aren't perfect as it doesnt take language specific characters into account, but generally you can glean 90% accuracy from it, so you only have to research a handful of words.

If anyones interested throw me a pm, since i'm offering this as free and work fulltime along with enjoying having a life, it's on an as and when basis rather than taking orders.

i never trust these translation things. i used to work as a head chef and i had polish and romanian people working in the kitchen. i wanted to put up notices so ran it through one of these translation things on the web and put posters up in english, polish and romanian. everyone had a right laugh at my expense cus it turns out it translated what i wanted to say into, shall we say insulting comments about myself lol

        Hello,

If you send me your email i will send you some papers, if the translations are good then maybe we can put the English translations on the website for all to access?

I just found that some of the PDF files i needed translating were protected so the program couldn't translate it on its own . BUT i found a way around it by converting the PDF file into a word document and it worked .
Who's email addy you wanting Ray ?

            Hello,

anyones with the translation software will do, we can see if it will work.

BTW does anyone know if a translation would infringe any copywrite laws?

            Ray

Yep, I'm afraid it would. Copyright laws protect the work against adaptations and translation would come under that. It's a shame as it's a good idea. I'm sure it would be possible to get permission from the creators of some of the papers to put up a translation if they were still credited.

As stated above that yes it would infringe on copyright if its then further published for anyone to download as an example, however as this is a fairly close knit hobby I really cant see any of the non english speaking writers objecting when asked.

As for just translating a document you already have in your possesion then thats fine as it's no different from translating it yourself, so you can go ahead and get things done then just be sure to ask the authors permission before making it avalible to the public.

But for anyone that does have any my email is feygan@ntlworld.com

If it's been published by a journal, then you need permission from that journal for further publication and redistribution. Can't see it happening for subscription based journals quite honestly.
