  • H.schmidti male help

My Haplopelma schmidti has moulted and it's a male!
My first male in years, and I have no idea how long he's got to live.
Should I wait until I can find a female for sale, or haven't I got that long?
I'll try to find somebody with a female to loan him out to, because there doesn't seem to be many females for sale at the moment.
I don't really know how loaning works, do I charge the person loaning him, or do I get 50% of the spiderlings?
And is it possible for me to place an ad on the Breeding Directory bit of this forum or do I have to be a member of a group to post there?
    Any help is much appreciated
    Samantha

    Hello Samantha,
Males of Haplopelma species should live around year or two after mature-molt,
of course it depends on the specimen, i think that You'll find a female in next
couple months... schmidti is worth to breed it by yourself
I don't know how loaning works in UK, but in Poland You can borrow a male
for some % of future spiderlings, or simply sell him. Of course if the species
is more valuable You will get more % of spiderlings.
But when You borrow a male of haplo species it is quite possible that your boy
will be hunted by the female, and that is a problem

    all best

      Hi Samantha,
why not advertise him on the classifieds here? Or wait for the BTS show and get a female there if you wish to breed him yourself. Good luck!

Thanks for your help Milosz and nicola
I think it's best if I wait until the BTS, or search for a female online, as I'd really like to have a bash at breeding them myself.
I've seen him lying on his back underneath some web:

          My pleasure
Oh Yes, breeding Haplopelma species is very pleasurable, i would say
addicting even. I'm preparing for minatrix in this year.

Regards and luck with searching for a female.

The H. longipes and Vonwirthi are believed to be both mis-identified H. minax. so i've just read. can any one els verify this?

From what I read, Haplopelma vonwirthi may be a regional varient of minax. If you look on RFUK, I gave you ID info for longipes, did you look at the link? And did you try measuring the legs?
I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link to another forum, but here's it anyway...

Have a look at the picture posted by Leon Lane about 3/4 way down, see the tufts of hair on the leg on longipes? H.vonwirthi won't have that, plus with the leg measuring key shown in the PDF you should be able to tell if it's a longipes or not.

                      Vonwirthi won't exist soon?

I agree i'm pretty sure its not a longipes, and the vonwirthi sp is soon to be discredeted, making any vonwirthi a minax. would you agree?

How do you know the H.vonwirthi is going to be discredited? lol

i read it in about tree different sources, apparenlty it was a big balls up on the part of Dr. ivor von-worth, who renamed an existing sp. or so i've read, correct me if i'm wrong by all means. i mean it can't be difficult to do, the cobalt looks slightly different depending on what region its from, and apparently so does the closly related minax. i have struggled to find any evidence to conflict with this, or even prove the vonwirthi is a registered sp.

It's still a valid species, who is this Dr. Ivor von-worth? Are you sure your not thinking of Volker von Wirth? As far as I know, there wasn't a balls up by von Wirth, but Schmidt (who described the species apparently, so how this is a mess up by Volker von Wirth confuses me) tried to redescribe Haplopelma vonwirthi as haplopelma volkervonwirth, or something like that, I may have read it wrong. lol

sorry volkner, lol. yeah my memory fails me on this one but i don't remember schmidt describing it as H. volknervonwirth??? any way i think we both need to read up more on the subject and as far as i am aware the H. vonwerthi is only temporarily valid as the sp is to be re-checked. dunno when like
