  • G.rosea Not eating

    Well, hi!

I have a lovely little G.rosea AF. She last moulted in august 06 (cant pin an exact date on that as I was on holiday and my father was looking after her) She fed well for many months. Till about may-june, then she started refusing food. She was a bit of a porker and i was often asked if she was gravid so i just assumed she wasnt hungry. she had her last feed around august 07, a year since the moult(and she hadn't eaten since june before that). she hasnt lost much abdomen size atall and could still be said to have a big bum.

I'm not even sure shes drinking, atall, i only seem to have to top her water up due to evaporation! Is this unusual for a chilie rose? I know they are common, but i cant find anything on the net about this ? and definatly not about not eating for 20 months!?

I'm keeping her above room temp (in the bug room) no misting, she has a water bowl, in a cocofibre and sand substrate in a hole i dug for her a long time ago. an interesting note I observed, she doesnt seem to be producing silk anymore. i noticed this and tested it by rubbing the silk off one side of her container (she would normally replace this if I accidentally rubbed it off during maintenence, i think it helps her to grip during climbing) and she didnt replace it.

Sorry for going on a bit i just thought details might be helpful. does anyone have experience in a situation such as this ? does it usually have a happy ending ??

As long as her abdomen looks OK, and she has constant access to water, then I wouldn't worry about it.

She'll probably moult at some point and then become a ravenous food machine

(and welcome to the forum! )

thanks for the reply I hope she moults but she's in immaculate condition, not at all looking like a spider that hasn't moulted for several years!

heres a quite recent pic of her. i took it in the picture taking enclosure. how glamorous (i know its isnt a very pretty photo taking enclosure )

      pretty baby

Visit www.ucalgary.ca/~schultz/roses.html. And, the record fast (as in "not eating" rather than "speedy") seems to be about 3 years!

Now here's an interesting question for those of you who make a specialty of keeping African and Asian species: "Do any of those from significantly south of the Equator operate the same as G. rosea?
