  • Euathlus sp.

Well went to kettering on sunday and was fantastic, managed to come away with a total of three t's (could have been many more) lol. Big thanks to Yvonne for two absolutley beautiful sp. a few people all commented on the Grammostola rosea. Managed to pick up a Euathlus sp. marketed as the velvet mountain beauty, has anyone had any experience with this species? quite unusual species with muted but wonderful colouration. Will post pictures when get a decent camera.

I have a E. sp. "Montane" here at 1.5 inches. A very beautiful species that likes to be kept on the cool side, slow growing and slightly skittish. They are an absolute joy to keep and care for. Good little feeders too.

Yeah mine is about the same size, i did read somewhere on another forum that they sometimes act like an arboreal and climb. He/she started to lay some silk near planting over hide last night, and has spent a lot of time on side, this maybe due to substrate being a bit too damp just trying to let it dry out. Had no hair flicking so far - seems very calm.

haha yeah mine tried that last nite, all i could see behind the plants was its abdomen. I had assumed it was still gettin used to its new home and would take a few days to settle in, hence why i have left feeding for a few days. Odd little spider though lol

nice acquisition...i did look at the sp Montane. have you seen the pics on the spidershop site about them? their habitat seems to be covered in snow...i don't know how much of the year that is, but they are clearly used to REALLY cold temperatures!
i would expect it's similar to Aphonopelma aberrans (which is also really Euathlas, just described as Aphonopelma for the time being), which Lee has told me is still active and alert under snow!
so on the cool side is right!

Kettering was great, i heard a few people say there weren't many spiders...and i suppose *quantity-wise* that was true...but there were amazing species, and i showed my usual foolish lack of restraint and got loads of stuff!

was nice to see Paul Carpenter there, and the other guy with him (sorry if you post here, didn't catch your name). had a pleasant chat about Thelcticopis modesta that i bought from them

Steve as usual had amazing spiders, the Chilobrachys sp "Aladdin" is lovely, and i am very pleased i nabbed a couple of slings, as well as some Haplopelma albostriatum!

i also put money in the pockets of Lee and Gareth from the Spidershop (bought Grammastola sp Concepcion and Aphonopelma sp Guatemalan Blue) and Bugs UK (only noticed their stand at the end, and they had fantastic stuff! unloaded them of a P lugardi and an Alipes g. grandidieri)
and i also got a couple scorpions (Smeringurus maesensis and Liocheles waigiensis) from Martin Goss. incidentally, Martin had a breeding pair of a lovely HUGE black and yellow huntsman species i've not seen before, from the Philippines, so will be looking forward to slings from that!

i also got a pretty nice-sized Avicularia sp Peru Purple from Tony Else.

it was great to see people i haven't seen since the last show and have a few good chats!

hey james, i saw you funnily enough and was going to say hello but i had my hands full, haha seems that your not the only one who couldnt stop buying new creatures. Funnily enough i bought a Hierodula Umbiculata from form Bugs Uk (i think). Saw the the Chilobrachys sp "Aladdin"and totally agree she was a beauty. Cant wait for the BTS show in may, just hope my membership arrives before then.

i had to google that Hierodula Umbiculata! lol
i was also tempted by some mantids...saw some crazy socially tolerant ones, very beautiful and large! may still succomb one day.
too bad you didn't get a chance to say hi, but you'll see me at the BTS if you're going!

it was tough resisting things...but the bargains were so good i got way more than i planned and actually spent less than i expected for what i originally planned?! which is nice!
