Heterometrus Madraspatensis popped!

I am really delighted to let all you scorpion lovers know that my H.madraspatensis popped sometime over the last 10-14 days.

we saw mum out tonight accompanied by 3 babies.

now with there being no breeding / rearing information on this sp i decided that these were too precious and dug them out. Mum wasn't amused!
Total head count of 12 healthy bambino's. they are brown in colour with pure white telsons. they even tried tagging me as we tried to get them out.. aww bless. two were very fat (might have eaten weaker siblings) and two must have recently shed to 2i, they were still a bit pale.

they may have been ok together for a while but i didn't want to risk it. anyway we fed them and at least one was eating within minutes.

SQUEEEEEE!!!!! my first success of the year and also my first success since coming back into the hobby... pics to follow tomorrow when I have better light

Loving those pictures Lisa, especially the eyebrow pic.
In the last photo, it looks like the scorpling has pupils, do scorps have such advanced eyes or are they just light sensors such as on most spiders and tarantulas?

hehehe thats a reflection of the camera lens But it does look like pupils.

As far as I know scorpions are pretty much as blind as a bat! so they are really light sensors. But I will double check how advanced the eye is. but from experience they are more accurate with vibrations than visual targets.

Have you thought about leaving a few babies with their mother just to see if she feeds them like other species have been observed to do??

would make for some nice pictures if that happened

If I had managed to get her into a maternity enclosure I wanted to try that. But as I wasn't expecting her to drop until about August time so it kinda didn't go to plan.

If she did feed them I wouldn't have seen it.

However armed with a little more information from this success I intend to use that to my advantage for next time and get the female into a shallow enclosure to see it all happening. Hopefully with a bigger brood as well.
