  • Heat mat query?

I have 19 t's all in seperate containers and they are all in a exo terra tank 24-24-12. I have put the heat mat on the outside of the tank on the side. I have the thermostat set at 24 c and I have put the sensor inside the tank on the opposite side. I have to digital thermometers inside the tank 1 reads 22.9 that is the closest to the heat matt and the other is 21 c that is at the other end beside the sensor. If I have set the thermostat 2 24c y are the 2 thermometers not sayin 24c. The thermostat is supposed to knock itself off at 24c. Should I place the heat mat inside the tank instead or is there anything else I can do to solve the problem.

Hi Ty, what I would try is putting a bit of polystyrene behind your heat mat to ensure that all the heat is going straight into the tank and not escaping out the back. I found that really helped in keeping the tank at a good temp. Don't put the mat on the inside, always keep it on the outside and on the back of the tank, never on the bottom. Many T's can live quite happily at house temp but that bit of extra heat will be good for them too. Hope that helps, greig

Are you sure you need supplemental heat at all? 19 animals and no species names make for some tough advice. As for polystyrene and heaters, having seen a collection burn, I'd opt for something labeled to work with heat sources. Also, be careful not to reduce the air flow to nothing as that promotes piles of problems, far worse than cool tarantulas.

I have 2 Asian t's and the rest are from south America. I only bought the thermostat because the temp was always droping below 21 c sometimes to 19. I live in northern Ireland so it is always cold here. Thanks for the advice on the polystyrene there is a little gap in the middle so will sort that out thanks alot.

I've noticed that my 2 T's behave pretty different when the heat mat is off. When it's off they tend to explore the tank more. When it's on they become like magnets and just sit on the wall where the mats are. This is making me think that the mat is not doing a very good job of heating the faunarium as a whole. Is this correct?

Again, I very much dislike making generalizations on behavior with out details such as temperature or species.

It is an interesting observation though.
